might be cheaper to just buy a whole new engine and at least in my mind carbon build up not a worry until it becomes one, one the other hand that poorly designed HVAC is .I wonder how hard it would be to add Dual Port Injection to the Ranger to fix the carbon buildup issue. Sigh another thing to do to make it run "adequately".

How does 2-port injection work? Fuel gets injected in two places all the time, before and after the valve?The 2024 next generation 2.3 in the Mustang is getting the direct and port injection to resolve the carbon buildup issues. Hoping that next generation 2.3 makes it into the 2024 Ranger and Bronco platform.
They use a combination of direct injection and port injection and the ratio of each source varies depending on operating conditions. I'd have to see the PCM calibration to quote the blend ratios for various operating conditions. From what I've read, they use the port injection to supplement the direct injection during cold starts for emissions benefits and also use it for power enrichment when you need sudden acceleration.How does 2-port injection work? My Subaru BRZ has DI & port injection. The 3.5 has issues with the cam phasers and guides. Not heard of it on the 2.3 yet.He talks about timing jobs. This is the timing chain replacement? Does the 2.3 have this issue?
A belt should be replaced but a chain?

Well I keep in touch with some gearheads I'd occasionally wrench with yrs back and from di engines they have torn down they do see carbon buildup on the intakes, some heavy but hadn't seem to impact engine operation when car was still running. There are of course reports of engines running poorly due to impingement of the intakes (audis, bmw) but it is my understanding that most of that occurred in the early days of gdi and improvements in design that reduce soot and blowby have lessened the risk. I'm not concerned about it, put a catch can on 2 yrs back but wouldn't today, took a trip recently of around 450 miles and the catch can was full at the end mostly water vapor and I don't know whether or not it disabled the pcv flow, I checked the oil level and noticed it was higher than normal so I assumed that it blocked the pcv operation , I've not had gas dilution issues.Very informative.
