I will need to replace my battery soon and wanted to ask y’all what brand(s) you would consider to be high performance?

The only extra electrics I have are fog lights so it’s not that I need extra power, but I do want the *highest quality* and most dependable battery available.

I've always liked Interstate batteries. Plus if you have a Costco card they give you a full 3 year warranty that's not pro rated.

The reviews are out for Top 5 Best Car Batteries (2023 Buyer’s Guide)

Not surprised by their picks. The third one listed looks like a good battery. Uses lead plates instead of the newer types that are not. https://www.automoblog.net/best-car-batteries/

Another list of recommended batteries - optima is at the top , there are some factors with Ford charging system that might justify the optima cost, but for me no 2 (Wally Mart) is what I'll pony up for at replacement time - but Wally Mart also sells AGM which is what the Ranger "requires" . and like the comment that this battery outperformed AGM batts costing 2x ~3x more. Consumer Reports used to and I believe still does rate Wally Mart batts as top buys.

My only thing is they have a Diehard listed as #2. I've had so many problems with these batteries before I'll never trust another one again. The last time I tried using them I had to bring it back 3 times within 1 year.

Interesting..... Project Farm had a comparison of different batteries - 4 lead acid and 2 AGM - and the DieHard performed better than the Optima. The other interesting thing was that the WalMart battery he tested performed very well and was one of (if not the) cheapest options for lead acid batteries.

This was several years ago but to have 3 fail like that soured me on them forever. I remember the first one only lasted 2 days and they said it had a couple dead cells. Ok stuff happens but the next one only lasted a month then the 3rd one finally made it a year. Now before that I always had Diehard batteries and had good luck with them along with my dad and friends. Maybe they had a bad batch (s) or I just had very bad luck that year.

Not surprising as a whole bunch of variables involved with batteries and the testing of them, no standard test I'm aware of. I believe diehard may be made by Johnson controls, same as wally mart, people have also dissected them and say the external packaging eg fancy handle was the only discernible difference. And agree with consumer reports testing and reasoning that spending big $$ on a battery often times doesn't translate to longevity.

I absolutely love Odyssey batteries. I have had incredible good luck with them. 2 weeks ago I finally decided it was time to change the two in my 7.3L diesel. They were still cranking the engine just fine, BUT, they were 13 years old. I decided to treat the old girl to a new pair.

Yeah, he had the manufacturers of the batteries and I think there were only 2 or 3 manufacturers in 6 batteries. Some were identical other than the brand sticker.

I don’t need a battery now, but for future reference may I assume that AGM and lead acid batteries are interchangeable so long as they are comparably spec’d? Is one better than the other in protecting against parasitic drain?
