Why did you pick the Ranger over the Tacoma?

Got to say, for me ads aren't even on my radar when evaluating a vehicle for potential purchase.
if that were the case, who would buy a ranger? I have yet to see a dedicated ranger commercial. I have see plenty tacoma, canyon, frontier but not a single ranger or even a maverick

edit: I looked on youtube for a commercial and couldn't find any for this gen but found this guy

My dad's first truck was a Ford F150 2-door, and my first vehicle ever was a '91 Ranger. So let that bias sink in.

Nonetheless I test drove a Tacoma based on reputation and plenty of my acquaintances drive one. There have to be 100,000 of them in the Vegas valley. I can't add anything you guys haven't summed up. It felt like a used truck and it was new.

I'm sure the new Tacoma will be a blast of a 4-banger as will the new Colorado. I'll smile at the fact that I drive the vehicle that changed the conversation. I say to my sports car crew all the time - on paper your car is much quicker than mine. I still occasionally drink my coffee in the garage. How do you feel about your quick car? On paper feelings or real feelings?

You could shift that language over to trucks easily and I would say the same thing about my Ranger.

Been a number of past discussions on Taco vs Ranger decisons, I find the marketing aspects interesting and agree regard Ford's ads - mostly mia and even when they do advertise I think they fall short compared to Toyota and GM. Also interesting to see repetitive ads from year to year seasonal ads - Mercedes, Toyota, GM are ones that come to mind and I see Subaru pitching how much they give to some charitable org. TV ads aren't cheap so they must be working.
But now that the TFL guys own a Ranger - the sky is the limit, if you think dealer markups were previously high we are now entering unchartered waters. On the other hand had the TFL guys had a Ranger back in 2019 I might now be driving a Tacoma. So ads can cut both ways.

I have seen a maverick commercial but not a ranger one. And the Tacoma ad attached - what exactly are they trying to tell me - don’t buy a new one? Didn’t need to commercial to tell me that?

Ford won’t risk losing a single F-150 sale by advertising their other trucks.

The Tacoma felt gutless and found the interior layout weird.

Ranger felt a lot more exciting to drive, my only quip is the steering wheel feels like it’s out of the Edge. Having my first custom ordered truck with all the options I wanted was great instead of Toyotas “this is what you get” trim level approach.

Which is dumb if that's the case. I've owned a dozen F150's and at that time they served their purpose as I needed a full size truck. Now that I don't no advertisement in the world could persuade me to buy one over a mid size truck. I feel they're loosing sales by not advertising the Ranger more. I can't tell you how many times someone will approach me in a parking lot asking me questions about my Ranger. Some didn't even realize it was being made again. Most (myself included) had this misconception about Toyotas quality being superior to all the others. This may have been true many years ago but today they're just like all the rest with their quality issues.

I’ve had the same reaction about not knowing it was in production again, and it’s a typically a good reaction when they do see it in person. I’ve had a few responses like, “I need to show this to x person who would love this as their next truck.”

To me the ad does an effective job of conveying the reputation for reliability that Toyota is known for (I'm by no means weighing in on that premise) as the daughter can proceed with other activities in her life and not worry about a Taco getting her home to see her dad. And yes as to the ad saying "don't buy a new one" that suggests that should you it will last as long as the one in the ad, to me very effective advertising. Then there is Lilly in those Lana turner throwback sweaters, and here I sit with Verizon being the only reliable cell service in my location

That's why I think Ford is dropping the ball on this. Not everyone jumps online or on YouTube to find the latest info. Everyone knows about the F150 so while I get that it's their bread and butter they really need to spend a few dollars advertising the Ranger. Especially now that the next Gen is going to launch soon and many of the other mid size trucks are getting a makeover. There's way to much competition now in the mid size market to NOT be advertising the Ranger.

They are relying on Google searches and this forum.

I'm a toyota guy.
Dad was a toyota guy.
We were a toyota family.

I drove a 2017 toyota tacoma sr5 for 3 years before buying a 2020 tundra trd pro.

The tacoma's stock seating setup was extremely uncomfortable, but I was young and dumb, and coming from a '99 civic, the tacoma looked and felt like a yatch in comparison. I'm 6'2 and my knees were always hitting the underside of the steering wheel, for instance.

The 6 speed auto transmission was garbage. It had no balls going uphill, always getting lost between 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. Which sounded horrible, and felt horrible since it was a new vehicle!

The bed felt very shallow, which made it great to get in and out of but when it came to hauling stuff, I always felt other trucks (including the ugly as sin ridgeline) had more bed space. Though this can be subjective.

Lastly, the gas mileage on it was horrible. With a 3in spacer lift on 32in tires I was getting about 11-15mpg. Horrible.

The Ranger was better, on paper, on all those fronts.

Comfortable seating for a full sized adult.
10 speed transmission.
Deeper bed.
20-23mpg on 3.5RC lift on 33in tires.

And the turbo is just a nice little bonus!

You have a twin turbo? lol

The 2.3 is a single turbo. The Bronco 2.7 V6 had the twin turbo. :D

I prefer the seating position in a Ranger, if I wanted to be sitting in a lawn chair, I prefer on the beach with a beer, not in a 45k$ truck!
