Just reset the gauge every time you move from park to drive
I don't know if there is such a thing for automotive use, but my semi had a setting to display fuel consumption in gallons per hour; 700 rpm Idle was about 0.7 gal/hr, 1.1 g/hr during a parked DPF regen. ~25+g/hr climbing a 6% grade fully loaded.
The truck's telematics would upload a detailed daily report on how much time was spent each at idle, regen, optimum rpm for weight ("sweet spot;" gear position vs g/hr) over-rev and a bunch of other stuff

To echo the sentiment... What the hell difference does it make? Being obsessed with gas mileage, is like counting strokes—as long as you get where you're going, it doesn't matter!

My turbo acts weird. Sometimes I get to peak boost very quickly and sometimes it takes a little while to get it warmed up to reach peak boost. Usually dictated by the scenery.

While in park there is NO mileage accumulated !!! Your Ranger is standing still, ie., NOT MOVING....
therefore, it is impossible for it to be adding mileage !!!

Yes, but you are still consuming fuel which overall reduces your mileage.

And, conversely when you take your foot off the gas and coast the fuel injectors are shut off so you are accumulating mileage with no gas consumption. This will increase your overall mileage.

When coasting, your still accumulating mileage , and injectors would have to be "on" or the engine would stall out. Injectors go off when engine goes off...can't have one without the other.
When in park, mileage is not being accumulated, but fuel is being used.
You would have to figure out some way to compare fuel used while mileage is being accumulated as opposed to fuel used while in park. Your trying to compare mpg to gallons per hour used.
You could possibly compare gph used when vehicle is in park and then when vehicle is being driven. But you would run into a problem comparing the two as when in park the gph usage would be pretty much static with only a slight variation in rpm, as opposed to the vehicle being driven at various speeds, in various gears, at various rpm's.
The OP's original post was mileage calculated while in park....there is none as vehicle is not accumulating mileage !!!
Fill your tank up, turn it on, leave it in park, and after a day, let me know how many miles it accumulated.

Nope, the manufacturers have been turning off the injectors when you are coasting as a fuel savings measure for years. Vehicles with automatic transmissions have lock up torque converters that keep the engine turning over even though there is no fuel being injected. It is real easy to see if you have an air/fuel gauge and it jumps to the max reading of the gauge.

Even in park, and even in the driveway when I'm in the house, Soupie's adding mileage - in my daydreams I drive all over the place and do heroic dump runs. =D

Did I ever mention that I love my Ford Ranger? =)

OK, injectors may be "off", while coasting, but when in park, it's using fuel so injectors must be "on" or something is feeding fuel to the engine cause it will run and run and run.
When coasting your in mpg mode...when in park your in gph mode and because of the almost infinite # of variables when in mpg mode (speed, gears, rpm's in each) you cannot compare the two. ie., if veh is doing 50 in 4th gear, rpm's are higher than if doing 50 in 10 gear....so your using more fuel.
But when in park, rpm's are pretty much same from hour to hour, day to day.
You just cannot compare the two.

IF you watch the "Average MPG" counter when idling, you can observe the calculation decreasing in real time. Especially when there is a very short time since last reset.

If you really want to test various driving strategies for conserving, or you just want to see how bad it gets when you hoon around, just reset the counter before the trip at issue.

To really log and parse out the specific details, you would need some kind of OBD2 app that can log your instantaneous consumption and miles traveled, dump it into a spreadsheet, and have at it.

If you want to get fancy, log speed and gear position, and figure out optimal speeds and rpm for various load scenarios. You can play around with manually shifting while you are doing this, and really have some number-crunching fun.

There's an app called "Car Scanner" for iOS that will do this, and will export the file after the session. I use it with a WiFi scanner I got off Amazon.
