I will keep my gas powered Ford Ranger until the wheels fall off.

Different horses for different courses. There are things that EVs do really well, and there are things that fossil fuel vehicles do well. It’s no different than why we have cars and trucks. Ever try to haul a load of manure in your Corvette or Honda Accord? Of course not.

I have a gas guzzling classic car for something to restore and drive on weekends for fun. And I love my Ranger as a daily driver and for road trips.

But I’d love to have a EV for in town driving, commuting to work, etc., if there were any EVs I really liked. I’d also love to convert my house to solar and use the solar panels to charge the car, but solar isn’t quite cheap enough yet for me to justify the cost.

Look at it this way - the more people that use EVs for situations where EVs shine (pre-pandemic, over 95% of all vehicle trips were less than 30 miles, and now it’s close to 98%), the cheaper gas will get for those of us that need gas for our trucks and old cars. Heck, I’d even buy a new EV Ranger for daily use of Ford made one and keep my Tremor for long trips, towing, off-roading, etc.

Again, different horses for different courses.

I don't see a big drop in price until they create a battery that uses cheaper, more readily available components. I read where MIT has built a few prototypes trying to make a cheaper one with equal or better range.

A large scale shift is still decades away.

Let's say they found a way to get better range by removing battery draining items. No touch screen. Hand cranked windows. Analog readouts, etc. That'll probably work.

But will they do it? Probably not.

I bet some people will go crazy for something like that.

If people are willing to campout in front of Best Buy for a 65 inch unknown brand, low quality HDTV for $100, they'll do the same for that type of EV.

For commuting AND travelling, the PHEV makes the most sense for me. No special charger, the PHEV will charge on a level one charger (aka extension cord) easily overnight. If that does not work, the ICE wlll. No 50A power supply needed or electrical service upgrade if one has a 100A service. No issues with reduced battery capacity up here when temps hit -30F. No issues with drastically reduced range when towing. The ICE will get you across the finish line.

A PHEV Maverick will be a huge seller and Ford will never be able to make enough of them if the rumour is true about them in 2024.

IMHO only and I stress my opinion only, BEV is a good concept but not ready for prime time because they are way too expensive to just use as a commuter rig. (Speaking for myself here)

I think EV pickups will always need some sort of an ICE backup if used in construction hauling heavy laden trailers and the like at least in the foreseeable future until technology can deliver greatly increased range and reserve power.

I remember when LCD TVs 1st came out. A 20 inch screen for $25,000. Ouch!

Today they are cheap. And cheaply made.

So... what kind of quality will we see with cheaply made EVs in the future? Not looking forward to owning one of those.
$80,000 now....in ten years $199.79 at Costco !!!

I thought it morphed to gravy from mashed potatoes. Turkey stuffing is better.
talkin mashed taties isn't as fun as gravy to me! Then again, turkey stuffing is a whole new tasteful ballgame! Love stuffing!

I need to do this. I need a cheap flat screen for my garage lol.

FYI I expect them to jack up the price (or the tax) on electricity if this shift happens. They will have to replace the fuel tax. A mile driven tax is popular for lawmakers. Some west coast states are exploring a mile driven tax now.

If you google UK price to charge electric car same a petrol you'll see if you use a public rapid charger there the cost per mile driven is about the same as a gas car. It's not an exact comparison because of the variables but under certain conditions you aren't saving on fuel....maintenance might be another story.

Wait for Black Friday. Or right before the Super bowl. ;)

Toll roads are popping up all over Austin. They can easily raise the rates if they can't collect fuel tax on EVs. But that'll make the ICE driver upset. No telling what each state will do.

Walmart has a 50" no name right now for $198. I'm not getting up at 4 am or sleeping in front of a store to save a hundred bucks lol.

Ohio raised the registration for an all electric to $250 to get some of the gas tax back. A regular car is around $50. This doesn't replace the federal gas tax though.

I am guessing in 20 years you will just pop open a lid then dump in a bottle of spring water along with a little purple pill and get 6 hours in the saddle with unlimited performance then repeat. Current evs are not the answer but just a starting point.
