Rangers aren't moving in So Cal. It's Tacoma country.
and the Tacoma discount is around $3K on a '19 high end model with a refresh '20 coming.

Toyota sold 22,832 Tacomas in May.

2-3 months ago, $1K off was big.
Hot selling vehicles do not get big discount....period!
They sell without big discounts.
Dealer lots are full of Rangers.
Hence, the big discounts and incentives.
I got more than 3K off on a 2WD Supercab STX and still waited almost 5 months to get it.
Unlike Toyota buyers,,, Ford buyer don't pay list.

Anyway back to the topic at hand, I would be all over a diesel if they give it real power. The 3.0 in the F-150 is a joke compared to the 3.5 EB, then in 5 years they’re going to say “see! nobody wants a diesel” and drop it once again.

I'm having trouble envisioning a scenario where the ranger's current engine doesn't provide enough power for something that you should be using a ranger for.

Dealer numbers in my area and you know you can get another $200-$500 off.

https://www.fordlincolncharlotte.com/search-new-ford-inventory.html?Make=Ford&Model=Ranger&pt=1
I'll let you in on a secret--see how most of the photos in that inventory are stock images? That generally means it's a truck that the dealer doesn't actually have. Most of the instances of people claiming that their dealer has "tons of rangers" involve dealer orders that haven't actually been delivered yet; most dealerships have very few rangers actually sitting around. If you map sales numbers to production numbers and compare to the number of ford dealerships, you'll quickly realize that it's not possible for every ford dealership in the country to have dozens of them on the lot because that many 2019 rangers haven't been built yet.

Doesn't stop the taco fanboys from talking about the slow sales and unsold inventory, but facts rarely get in the way of a good story, right?

True to some point but the first listed is in stock and a $5300 discount on a $40K list is high.
The Rangers with the discounted numbers are in stock. Others are coming and will be discounted highly as well.

I was at that dealer which is also a Lincoln dealer with my MKC getting serviced and talked to my salesman. He said Ranger sales are ok as they should with those discounts. If not, the Ranger is in trouble.

I have to think Ranger not selling as well as I thought it would. I haven't seen one within 100 radii here. The dealer has about 14 mostly XLTs. Says sales have "slowed" Then I see instant $5000 discounts, Bamm just like that....way too soon.

On the other hand.......
I think Ford makes 500 a day.....They should have year to date have completed 50,000 trucks. That leaves about 25,000 after (subtracting delivered) on all Ford Lots nationwide...Not many trucks

Didn’t say the 2.3 is weak, I just wouldn’t want a diesel option to be wimpy in comparison.

I'm not sure what to think about a diesel Ranger yet. I feel the VW diesel scandel has put a lot of people off them with the possible exception of the truck market. A downside is a diesel would increase the starting price by several thousand dollars at least. Many of the reviewers are already complaining loudly about how much a loaded Lariat is running. They all say for that price why not buy a F150. Doubt they would put a diesel in a lower trim Ranger. They would stick it in a higher tier thereby increasing cost even more .

A large increase in power or torque from a diesel over the 2.3 EB may expect people to want the Ranger to have closer to F150 tow / haul capacity. Ford won't put the F-150 in danger and I don't think I'd want to haul that much more in a mid sized truck.

There was a time I was interested in the diesel Colorado. The added price plus extra maintenance costs related to diesels gave me pause. Possible expensive fuel rail and DEF issues after the warranty expires had me second guessing the desirability. The complaints of people on the forums with the truck going in to regen mode frequently. Robbing their power and expecting them to continue driving until it is finished. I just did not see the trade offs as worth it.

The up front costs of the diesel engine takes many years to pay off with the increase in mpg one would get. If you tow a lot then you would recoup it back quicker. If you run unloaded mostly, then it would take longer.

I really think people need to give this Ranger some time to build up sales. They only started making them about 6 months ago. How was Tacoma's and GM's sales numbers their first year of production? The first few months the Rangers were not at full production yet. Most of the people I have spoken to do not even know that there is a new Ranger out. I'm looking forward to getting my truck soon so I can show them proof that Ford is actually making them currently.

I would be all for a hybrid type Ranger. Mostly electric with a small gas generator for backup power like the BMW i3. Plug in when you get home and it is fully charged for you in the morning. There is a lot to be said about the instant torque of electric motors. People had a rough time remembering to plug their cell phones in at the evenings but we do it without a second thought nowadays. We can get used to doing that with electric vehicles in time as well.

I would assume the diesel would get better mileage.
Baby Duramax Canyon @ 19,000 = 26.6 mpg

28.6 mpg with a decent payload on a 1300 mile vacation round trip deep into the Rockies and back including plenty of idling and some necessary 4x4 during the stay. Twas a snowy escape from reality. Snowy Trouty and Gemmy. I forget what are we talking about?

Fuel range well over 600 miles per tank when filled to the brim.
