Is it a stupid idea?

My plan is to get the "near-cost" Grainger 8 year warranty which is really priced right but I still want to get the Livernois tune. I figure I'll be covered for stuff like blend door and most expensive repairs as long as the engine stays solid. I dunno maybe I can pull a flash back even then. $500 for +80hp/100tq is hard to resist. I'm not interested in the Ford tune because it's weak, I have to pay a dealer to install and can't switch back to 87 for road trips or when gas skyrockets.

I have an extended warranty and the Ford tune. I would describe the Ford tune as “weaker“ than other third party tunes, but not “weak” per se. The truck is plenty peppy for me and I don’t worry about the tune causing any damage at the rated hp/tq.

Have you ever seen any numbers on the FRPP tune? Neither have I nor has anyone else. It's either an 'off the shelf' Livernois tune or one rewritten to Ford specs. Price break with the Livernois tune....

I have the 5* tune with Ford Premium Care extended warranty. Have had the 93 performance tune on for 17K miles now and not a single issue. So far not worried for long term issues with it.

Most third party warranties don't exclude possible damage when after market items are installed. I had one on my heavily modified MKV VW and the carrier covered replacing the turbo at 120K, the CV shafts twice as well as almost the entire front suspension when the control arm bushings failed causing damage to the adjustable struts I had installed. They replaced the struts with the same ones along with all new lower control arms and sway bar bushings. My out of pocket for all that was 250 bucks. Just be sure to check the fine print to see what if anything they exclude and see if you're fine with that.

I wonder if it's best to flash back to stock in that situation or just leave it be. Since I read in a post on here that flashing shows an ECU cycle of 1 or something like that, a red flag.

Edit: Mine would not be third party but rather the Ford/Grainger 8 year.

Sorta like one time I failed inspection for a check engine light and I cleared the codes with a reader right before I went for the retest. Well the DMV saw it was cleared and said "come back next week".

Dude it says right here. +45 measly horsepower for $900.

Those aren't backed up 'dyno numbers', just something FRPP printed on their literature.... We've seen every other 'tune' on a dyno except FRPP's tune....

Ford has historically under rated their cars' HP/TQ ratings - thinking this 'tune' may very well be under rated. I have the FRPP tune installed in my Lariat. If and when I hear about a local 'dyno day' I'm trotting my Lariat over....

It may be. But going off the box the Livernois has almost twice the power and I can flash back to 87 when I want. Being locked into 91 unless I want to pay a dealership to unflash me is too much of pita. I just waited a week without my truck for them to do a driveshaft bearing.

Really I don't think they can compare because the Ford tune is canned right? And Livernois is more custom because you send them your stock tune and they build the tunes you want off that.

It has been mentioned on here more than once. Factory warranty and extended warranty’s are affected by installing tunes. For engine it’s 3 years or 36K no matter what Ford approved plan you have

I have the Livernois tune and just added the extended warranty to mine. I figure I'll still be covered for anything that goes wrong that's not tune related and hopefully the engine doesn't go Boom! ?

Well if the worst happens...I wonder if years from now one could swap in a junkyard Ranger Raptor engine...

The Livernois tunes are backed by dyno proven results. By '87' I believe you are referring to the stock tune? The stock tune/ECM-PCM will actually adjust itself for the grade of gasoline you're using, whether 87, 90 or 93. The stock tune will give you 15 more dyno proven RWHP when using 93 fuel over using 87 fuel. (240 rwhp vs. 255 rwhp). The Livernois 93 tune bumps up to 305 dyno proven rwhp, primarily by increasing turbo boost and adjusting fuel/ignition to handle the difference.

The Livernois 'My Calibrator' holds the stock tune 'in storage' after the custom tune is downloaded - easily reversible. The Ford and Livernois 'My Calibrators' are identical and work exactly the same way for obvious reasons.

The only difference in this picture is we don't have any solid dyno numbers for the Ford tune. Could it be identical to the Livernois tune? Who knows? All I know is when the Ford device is connected to Ranger, Livernois credits come up.

Keep in mind that ANY tune will be visible in the flash counter.

I think someone mentioned that there is also an ignition cycle counter that is reset every time the vehicle is flashed, which means that if you flash back to stock before taking your vehicle in the ignition counter will show that you've started the truck 2 or 3 times since you've had it. Red flag there.

Even though mine has less than 100 miles running a tune, I'm sure my flash counter is in the double digits just due to all the tune failures I had.

I personally think that the bottom line is going to be the dealer that you're working with.

Some dealers are better than others in dealing with tuned vehicles.

If they decide to go hardline they can make your warranty void in a heartbeat.

Or, they can be flexible and help you out if you encounter an issue.

As with most anything, YMMV.

I could go stock or Livernois 87 tune from 91-93 tune. For longevity I do not think I would want to run a tune on 87 though. I did run 91 for the extra kick for the life of the truck until gas went to $4+. There is no 93 around here sadly.

Maybe I misread the instructions. I thought you send them the stock tune but you just download it to the unit.
