Okay first thing because I know people will say it. I am aware there is probably no super secure way of locking my dirtbike to the bed of the truck for any extended period of time. I am just trying to stop the opportunist thief not someone with an angle grinder and determination.

I ride solo a lot and would like to do something when I need to run into a gas station to pee, buy water etc. With just tie downs someone can cut them, roll it out, and be gone in like 30 seconds.

What I am thinking is using the unused holes in the top corner of the bed, fabricating a ring to bolt with security torx there that is big enough for a small u lock and the chaining it in to the frame with a beefy motorcycle chain.

I was wondering if anyone has done something similar or has a better suggestion.

Thanks in advance

Good idea using a security type torx. But, your tailgate should lock either automatically or with a key...just make sure it's locked. That would require someone to actually lift the bike over the top of the bed...kind of impractical unless your the Hulk.....
Unless...what type of dirtbike are you referring too ??? Pedal or a vroom vroom ???

chain it with a decent padlock. run the chain through the factory holes in the forward end of the bed wall. one out, then get underneath the truck and feed it back in the other hole with enough slack in the middle, then to the bike and lock the bitter ends together with the padlock. not super secure but would prevent the average jerk walking by from grabbing it.

you can see the spot where this member ran the wire loom, one is on each side. the rubber grommet comes out with a pull and goes back with a push. so remove the grommets run chain through and to bike and then padlock.

At the foot of the bed I have a large chest and a compressor that are cable locked via cable and 2 padlocks/keyed alike. Used the factory tie downs.....

Sorry, I couldn't resist. :)

They are Braap Braap type. The tailgate has to stay down since I have the 5 ft bed. I do try to back up to a brick wall or dumpster or something if its handy so they can't roll it out the back. Would have to hulk it over the side but there isn't always one available.

That's a solid idea, thanks!. I'll probably runa a chain and paddlock on the back side and just leave there so the bikes and whatever else I want to lock up. I can then just u lock around the whole chain.

Look at the Abus line of padlocks and hardened steel security chains....some of the best there is.
You could simply use the factory tie downs at the front of the bed, but if someone really wants too, a pair of bolt cutters will snip the tie downs easily. Security wise, you could get some heavy duty eye bolts and drill your own holes in the inside of the bed, and locknut them by reaching up from under the truck, between the inner and outer wall of the bed.
Lots of ways....just depends on how secure you want to get.

I use the Onguard Rottweiler to lock my bicycles and kayaks. Most cheap bolt cutters won't get enough of a purchase on it to do any damage and those big enough will require some real work to cut it. I cut things with bolt cutters at work a lot - fire fighter. Chains are much easier to cut than large diameter cable. This with your bolt idea and a locked tailgate in a truck bed as deep as ours will make it serious work to steal anything in the bed of the truck - hopefully someone would at least notice a thief working that hard in the bed of the truck.

On a side note, be sure to use a quality lock when connecting the cable or chain. I took up the hobby of lock picking during Covid times while having to homeschool my son when the schools closed. I'm an amateur, at best, and can pick most pad locks quicker than a angle grinder can cut it...obviously also quieter. Most Master locks are picked in 10 seconds, or less. Masters resettable 4 dial locks, which are sold everywhere (HD and Lowes), look nice with the brass finish, but are hot garbage...Anyone, with 5 minutes of practicing, can pick it in about 2 seconds.

Needless to say, before I started the hobby, I was pretty naive about quality locks.

I know that nothing is safe in the bed of a truck, but I had to try, I braided a cable, crimped and welded up the ends and put it through the bed wall with 6mm ARP bolts with locking nuts on the backside.
It's locking just the ramp or bike and ramp.

A really talk camper shell, or enclosed trailer would be the only really safe way. Otherwise a chain and a good lock to one of the tie downs would slow someone down enough to let you pee.
