I took that train as a kid. Incredible memories. Great photos Dave! You are giving me inspiration on where i need to take me kid.
Matt your kids will have a blast as I'm sure you already know and the memories last forever! The kids with the couple we met had smiles on their faces the whole time, especially when they sounded the horn. lol These times make me feel like a big kid myself. Awe who am I kidding I never grew up yet! ??

if you took it as a kid you may recall they used to use authentic coal/wood burning steam locomotives and if you were in an open car the ash and cinders were part of the experience. All that ended with the big fire caused by cinders from the steam loco a few yrs back and the RR was required to go to oil burners as part of a settlement with the forest service. I'll be on the blues train that they are doing in Aug, it's also a good time.

I think the cumbres and toltec might still be using steam locos.

Yes it was an open aired car, i remember just watching the scenery as we winded through the mountain. Sad to hear that's changed but best not to start any fires.

Dave's pic "sparked" my interest and according to this article they purchased 4 diesel electric locos but are also retrofitting their steam locos to run on oil instead of coal. Personally I much prefer the old steam locos and they keep a lot of people employed as they are high maintenance, I believe most parts are fabricated in the shop there.

Dave, when in South Dakota.......go to Spearfish.......on Main St you'll see a gas station (the only one).....go west about 1/2 mile.......you'll come to an intersection with a Chevy Dealer on the NW corner......take a left and drive into the alley.......little Restaurant called Sanfords......very good food! Sorry I don't know the street names......just know how to get there!
....and drive into the alley...

Now, why do I feel like I'm watching a scene from Goodfellas?.....

Great pics Dave, done the Grand Canyon rail from Williams. Dang it now we have to do this one too… This really sucks!! But in a good way!!
We did the Grand Canyon RR a few years ago and that's a great one too. A friend of mine just did it late last fall and there was snow on the ground and said the views were awesome.

Great day for a 3 mile hike here in town. We were 3/4 of the way back when my gf took a header and ended up at the Urgent Care to get checked out. Good thing it's only a bad sprain and very swollen knee and a good scrape on her forearm. Other than that she'll be back out in no time but this time I'll keep a better eye on her. She could trip over the yellow line on the side of the road. It's a joke between us because it's really true. lol ?

I truly hope your GF recovers quickly. It would be a bummer to be in pain on such a nice vacation.

Thanks Kent I appreciate it! I think now she's more relived that it was nothing serious but at first she was scared and freaking out she damaged something inside. She's a good sport and I think her leg would need to be dangling off for us to call of the rest of the trip. lol I'm sure the next few day will be the worst so no dancing for a while. ?
