Retired, work is a four letter word.
USAF UH-1 Huey Crew Chief. 10 years 5 months active duty.
20 years active, retired MSGT, also a 67N40 UH1H and UH64 crew chief before flight operations and phase team chief. 2 tours in Vietnam, Panama, Honduras, and 2 tours in Germany. Did REFORGER twice and froze my butt off. Flew left seat as an X-Ray doing non-standards many times. A whole lot of good times with great people, and a few shit holes (Grafenwohr). Spent time at a CAS (combat alert site) for Pershing II nuc's flying site security support for the warheads. All in all an exciting 20 years, then I retired and went directly into Law Enforcement, just asking for punishment I guess. Been retired since 2005.

Dang! My wife and I drove our RV right through there a couple of years ago, looked like a nice little town.

An interesting blog note on the Cold Response 2022 exercises.

It seems that a Finnish HQ and Signal company, a command & support element for fighting troops, is able to take out an US Marine company. Wouldn't think that a HQ element would beat a front line element in CQB.

Its scripted, the exercises had a good guys and bad guys. The bad guys supposed to loose at the end. Most of the scripts are from previous wars, maybe this one was WWII.

There was a more detailed explanation on newspaper for the action.

On the grand scale it's a scripted action but the battles are free forming. In this case the recon failed miserably and did not notice the dug in and camouflaged HQ company. Then came the marines and did a heli drop to the field next to the HQ. Came as a surprise for both teams.

Pretty much "We were soldiers... and young" situation, with smaller element and with no immediate support. Observing judges determined the marine company was wiped out.

We had exercises like this when I was active duty in the US Marines decades ago, my team will play the loosing group and we would simulate an attacked with the most stupid thing to do if it was a real battle. It was like hale marry type of move.

Air Force got the best facilities, bases and mess halls. We used to go to Kadena Air Base mess hall, they got the best chow.

I’ve been to Kadena and Naha :)
We took the 130’s to Naha for corrosion control.
