Because I don't know any better, is it not concerning to have that much weight riding completely on the tailgate like that? Or is that an OK thing to do?
Hi Chris,

Tailgate is rated at 485lbs max.... The worry would be dynamic loading when you hit a bump. Since not familiar with the weight of this quad I would get the rear weighed and if close to 500lbs...I would not recommend hauling the quad with the Ranger. JMO...

Best,
Phil

I think it weighs around 700 pounds total, plus accessories.

If it was a concern, couldn't you put some 2x12s the length of the bed to distribute the weight better?

Correct the curb weight with fluids is 705 lbs. Most of the weight should be in the center already (off the tailgate) with the motor and trans being the heaviest point.

I usually haul my ATV in my trailer but since I thought I could have to do a turn around in a small trail, (which I had to do), I wanted to bring it in my bed. Did the 200km/124miles no problem on pretty shitty road

Not shown in these pics as this was the test fit. I put 2 pieces of plywood under each set of wheel running vertically. So the front and the rear tires on the left are on the same piece. Repeat for the other side. It distributes the weight and keeps the tailgate from bouncing up and down. Biggest concern in a setup like this are the cables. They can snap if old or damaged.

Personally, I've never had any issues and nobody in my entourage, running a setup like this, going into the bush for thousands and thousands of km/miles over the lifespan of their trucks had any problems. I know, small sample size, but the only time I saw someone have a problem with their tailgate was with a motorcycle, where the rear tire was on the very very end of the tailgate and bend it right in the middle.

Hi Billy,

If the total weight was 700 lbs as I have come to understand, and we take a 50/50 distribution of weight as there is no info on rear loading, then you are good to go for a bump of 1.4g which is a very hard bump so it would be within the tailgate rating. That means...good to go unless you hit the hailmary of pot holes or bumps....

I proposed this concern as it is better to know the loading instead of guessing...Few people factor dynamics in their loading of the tailgate. I want this put on the table for thought about loading considerations.

Make sense?

best,
Phil

For anyone wearing out few pants at dynamics calculation classes it does.

I would assume that the 485lbs is for uniform load but how about the point load? Will it break from the hinges or is the failing part the cables? What would be the load rating if we reinforced the cables? What is the safety margin on the tailgate?

I remember a case of false floor which was good for the uniform load but the point load cracked the tiles. However we noticed this in advance and required the landlord to make a test at outside, after which he redid the flooring.

Loaded up my 750 KingQuad to try to go to the hunting camp! A full size ATV fits nicely, even in the 5ft box. The truck sits pretty level and feels nice. The rear tires sit right in the middle of the tailgate.

Ended up walking from the nearest road since there was still 3 feet of snow even if there's almost no snow left in town lol. I'm beat after walking a couple of kilometers in so much snow
