I have a 3in catless downpipe with Vibrant defouler using the smallest insert coupled with custom full 3in exhaust with a 100 cell XS Power metallic catalyst cat (from Summit Racing) further downstream. With the FP canned tune, no CEL and AFR at WOT in the high 11s - low 12s. Very safe even with a the high flow K&N intake (their actual intake with a solid lid vs foam insert lid it comes with) with both stock radiator cowl air feed and fender air feed. After downpipe mods I’m in boost at 10% throttle cruising, and ECU has compensated very well in overall drivability.

As the Ranger was Ford’s first 2.3 Ecoboost motor with a fully electronic wastegate on the turbo, the ECU has the ability to keep boost spikes (that other turbo vehicles with mechanical wastegates would need tuning compensate for) under control with precision. This is an excellent benefit of this electronic wastegate tech as damage from lean boost spikes is controlled while still maintaining smooth power at WOT and you benefit from increased turbo efficiency that mods like a downpipe provide since the FP fuel maps at WOT run very rich. I’m sure a custom tune would find more power by leaning out the rich FP WOT AFR to provide even more power, but for me I appreciate the safety of the FP tune even when coupled with a downpipe.

One final data point, with the stock DP the FP tune had the WOT AFR in the high 10s - low 11s. Thus my 3in catless downpipe did increase power by leaning out the AFR, but still keeping the AFR in a very safe range. Overall, I’m very pleased with the FP tune and it’s mod friendly compensation (vs running on the ragged edge of safe and needing a retune for any mods).

Incorrect.

I can put you in touch with a few right now.

The EPA isn't worrying about little guys just yet.
Oh really? Post up these shops names then.... I guarantee someone with a reputable shop won't risk it.

Yes, that would be smart. Publicly post them on a forum so that they are inundated with phone calls by people not even looking to get tuned. Thus making them think something is up.

I will include a link to well known national tuner who still sells a "stage package" with a high-flow catted downpipe and OTS tune to support it.

https://www.cobbtuning.com/products/stage-package/subaru-02-05-wrx-stage-2-power-package-w-v3

If you're really looking for a tuner and not just being argumentative I might be able to help you out. ;)

Yes don't mention this so called tuner and give them business. Cobb doesn't even support the Ranger so why post that link. So many "professional" Ecoboost Ranger tuner experts on this page! ??? I'll trust what Livernois says over random people on here! ?

The tuners I was thinking of specifically don't need the business. They have over 1 month waits for dyno time. A random call from out of state asking, "will you tune a downpipe?" would not end well.

I posted that link because your original point, which I was refuting, was...

Either way NOBODY can do anything related to tuning with a aftermarket cat anymore.
Again, there are plenty of tuners who will tune for a downpipe. Ranger or not. You're correct, Livernois won't touch them. Livernois is a LARGE national tuner with ties to O.E.M.s. They are not the end all be all in engine, or ecoboost engine, tuning, they are but one player in the game.

Just because they won't tune for a downpipe doesn't mean you can't get it done.

I may be a "random person" but I've been driving turbocharged vehicles for over 2 decades. Many of which have been tuned. Really tuned, on a dyno and road, not just remote tuned via logs or OTS maps.

If you think the OTS map vendors and remote tuners are your only option, you need to get out more. I can virtually guarantee that if you live in a major metro area you can find 2 or 3 reputable local tuners who can tune your truck.

I'm surprised the tuner conversation kept going. It's clear that @Travis9935 is more of a typical customer and not someone building and tuning cars regularly, business or not. I'd like to know his profession so I can tell him things about his field like I know them, but possibly have no idea. :)

Hi, with this dp being 3'', what needs to be done to mount it to the stock 2.5 exhaust?

Hey! It will mount directly to the OEM connection with the provided adapter.

I got here from a different thread and read through.

I'm reluctant only because it sounds like this has the potential to cause some problems if the motor isn't run within very specific parameters.

I presume the turbo exhaust is 3 inches and the factory exhaust connection is smaller?

On older cars a free flowing cat didn't trigger engine codes - you had to balance the exhaust system to guard against fires.

I wonder if further tweaking DP diameters and fuel injectors along with some discrete tuning would give better durability and less risk of CEL or failing tailpipe emissions sniffers.

Of course after all that investment the gains might be minimal.

Just shot you a PM!
Any way I can get a code? I just got another Ranger after 9 months without mine and plan on going full send on mods!
