So I stopped by the Ford dealer down the road from where I work. I figured rather than having my yearly inspection, first oil change and tire rotation along with trying to get my genuine ford part keyless entry keypad programmed all in one visit, I'll just try to make an appt for the keyless entry keypad programming and checking the transmission fluid dipstick in one separate visit. You may not have read in another thread where I mentioned that one time (and only one time) in the really cold weather where I didn't let the truck warm up 3 or 4 minutes, I exited my driveway in Reverse, put the truck then in Drive 2H and it wouldn't move (no snow or rain on roads). I then put it in Reverse, wouldn't move. Put in in Drive and 4H and it moved. I was then able to put it in Drive 2H on the fly. So I wanted to get the transmission fluid level checked.

I went to the service desk, said I had two question. 1) How long will it take to program my genuine Ford part keyless entry key pad?
2) Would they check my transmission fluid level on the dip stick? Told them I wasn't capable to slide under the truck and check myself.

Answer I got: Will take 1.2 hour to program the keypad according to computer. BUT, they have never done one so maybe only .5 hour, just don't know.

Yes, they can check the transmission fluid, but it wouldn't be under warranty to just check the dipstick and I would be charged since that would fall under "maintenance"! I told them again what it did that one time and it should be covered under warranty. I was told if they do a full diagnosis (checking for codes) and then checking fluid, yes it would be put under warranty. I said well put it in for service that way then!

It is annoying when you have to press a service dept to find a way to make something happen. Something I talk about as “disservice”.
Give a guy options. Find a way to get to a yes.

I like the convenience of the keypad. I ordered mine from the factory and then relocated it to the inside of the fuel door.

Interested to see where things go with the keypad. I believe Phil @P. A. Schilke seems to have gone a few rounds with local service departments and has relegated his keypad to the spare parts bin. If I recall, they want to charge a handsome amount and cannot provide any assurances it would work.

your best bet is to have "the Works" completed. more value for your money there.

unless the sheet has changed, one of the checks is transmission fluid level check and color.....

Thanks for that info! I'll cancel having them do the transmission/diagnosis & fluid check since I'm going to be taking it to my preferred dealership for the oil change, tire rotation and state inspection. That dealer is further away (where I would sit and wait for vehicle) and they told me they would need my vehicle 4-1/2 hours to do all that plus program the keyless entry keypad. So at least if I get the keypad programmed at the dealer down the road from work, that will knock a little time off the other visit.

I know... that's the main reason I want to place it on the vehicle myself AFTER it's programmed. Other dealerships told me it had to be ON the vehicle for them to program it. This dealer down the road didn't really give me a hard time about that... but LOL they said they never did one before! When he told me that, I just said, "Well I imagine Ford gives you instructions."

Hi Dan,

Yep...I have to drive to Nagales for them to help me, but 40 miles and to then have to sit until the can "fit me in"...what??? So my plan is to get the sales manager to recognizeI I won't be buying another vehicle through them, might be worth somethng...Sitting in the dealership for some 5 hours is not an option... I could drop this off on my local dealer..some 2 miles away but I have to pay their price and leave the truck for 3 or 4 weeks as they are swamped.

Best,
Phil

This is what has become of service at too many stealerships today. Complete lack of reliable service.

And oh my goodness, if they are going to have someone working with the public and answering phones, remember that is possibly the first impression the public may get of your dealership. Case in point, I just called my "preferred" Ford service department and the woman answering the phone in Service sounded downright miserable and unaccommodating. It was like pulling teeth to get an appt for the week of 3/21.

When I was in the business curriculum in high school, we were told to actually smile when answering a business call. Sounds silly, but it does kinda give you a bit of a lilt to your voice!

I wanted to know the price difference between "the Works" semi-synthetic oil change vs. full-synthetic. I felt like I was putting her out by asking that!
