As I get older and more busy with life, I find that I pay for some things I used to do myself. Detailing my cars is one of them.

I use the same detailer for all my vehicles and have for a few years. The truck is with him right now for correction and ceramic coating. My other vehicles required 2-3 days for the first time through and that was the plan for the Ranger. Turns out it's not the case; here's the message I got from him -

"Hey John, still getting the truck decontaminated, truck has a lot of contamination, my assumption is sitting for months before heading to dealership/transport. Going to begin paint correction/enhancement on the paint as soon as I get all contamination off the surface. My goal is to have it finished by next Sunday."

Granted, a portion of the length of time is because he's got other appointments he scheduled so he's working on the truck around those since he wasn't able to get it completed in the 2 days we planned on. But he said it's the worst contamination on a new vehicle he's ever seen. He says it's not a thickness issue - scope matches the same (increasingly thinner) paint thickness of all the other new vehicles he sees. His guess is the length of time just baking in the sun in an industrial park.

Now I really can't wait to get it back and see the difference.

Update with after photos (which don't begin to do justice)

I considered paint correction when I first got the vehicle. I have the equipment to do paint correction, not my favorite task at all, and like you I would now have a reputable shop do the work.

I took the truck to the guy that did my Mustang years ago, and first thing he did was measure the clear, and while there was enough clear to perform a correction he advised against it as there would be very little clear left to provide much UV protection long term. He was also concerned about the roof where sections were so thin he would be nearing a 1/2 mil after correction, and where the lower side windows meet the doors, the waves in the clear would cause issues. In the end I abandoned the idea.

Hope yours turns out well. Can't wait to see the results.

When I did my Ranger for the first time there was A LOT contaminants in the paint. I did the baggie test and it felt like 220 grit sandpaper over every panel. I had to go over it 2-3 times with a clay mitt to get it smooth. This last detail back in early December I had zero so it's defiantly coming from either sitting at the factory or the railcars, most likely both.

Now my Jeep was baby smooth. I went over every inch of it and never found one rough spot. Looking forward tp seeing yours once you get it back, it should shine like a mirror.

I thought of you this weekend when my girlfriend's dad was bragging about his Bronco on order. They'll told him 12 weeks and I laughed and sent him the article about plant shutdowns.

Unless he ordered one without any constraints (Big Bend soft top) he's in for a long wait. lol

He was smart enough? cheap enough? to order a bare bones model. Even went with factory steel wheels. I'm still betting it'll be fall when he sees it.

It's possible then. I'm not over on B6G much but last time I noticed someone just placed an order back in September and it was already getting built in late January. Another deciding factor is the dealer he went through and how many orders they have and allocations. That there seems to be more of a factor than the build itself. As time goes by I'm seriously thinking of changing my Badlands order to the Base SAS. If they keep price protecting us that really is the best bang for the buck. Will be interesting to see when he gets his built.

What the difference from 'baking in the sun in an industrial park' and baking in the sun in my driveway or at work or while on the highway?
My guess the problem is just poor paint quality from the start, not that it has been sitting for a time.

My understanding is that it's more what the sun is baking into it - bird crap, rain, whatever dirt from environment, etc, laying on the fresh clear coat without getting washed or rinsed for two months. And then the kid at the dealer rubs all that around when he hand washes it for delivery, making things worse.

The same thing was true of the windshield; the off gassing plastics just built up on the windshield to the point the dealer gave up trying to get it off. My guy said off gassing film is common but mine is horrible because it sat all day for months with the sun baking it onto the inside of the windshield. He's still playing around with different products to get it off.
