Wait till you guys hit "senior citizen" age . You will get calls from people claiming to represent Social Security, or Medicare, or Medicaid all claiming that your info has been hacked, or you qualify for better coverage. All have funny accents.
Daily calls about my vehicles warranty running out and I can extend it...I tell em I have 4 vehicles and which one they are referring too...they hang up. All have funny accents.
Daily calls from someone claiming to be from some police organization asking for a contribution.
I tell em to stop by in a marked unit and I will consider it...no one has come by yet. Has a Texas type accent.
Funny thing is that many of the calls that come in show up with our local 540 area exchange.
Gotta love technology.

I have gotten some of those and I'm still a bit away from being a senior. As for the local area code from scam calls, they spoof the phone number to make it look like it is local. They are working on that now with a system called STIR/SHAKEN to block spoofed calls. I think some carriers if not all major ones have already implemented it or are testing it. I think it was suppose to be required by June 30th of this year but I'm not sure if that deadline has been extended.

This is a quick explanation of STIR/SHAKEN from the FCC website:

https://www.fcc.gov/call-authentication

STIR/SHAKEN is a framework of interconnected standards. STIR/SHAKEN are acronyms for the Secure Telephone Identity Revisited (STIR) and Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using toKENs (SHAKEN) standards. This means that calls traveling through interconnected phone networks would have their caller ID "signed" as legitimate by originating carriers and validated by other carriers before reaching consumers. STIR/SHAKEN digitally validates the handoff of phone calls passing through the complex web of networks, allowing the phone company of the consumer receiving the call to verify that a call is in fact from the number displayed on Caller ID.
If anyone is interested the link above has more info about it.

I have my phone set to silence unknown callers these days. That cuts out 99% of the crap because more often than not they don't bother leaving a message and all I see is missed calls when I open my phone. Legitimate callers that are not in my contact list will leave a voice mail and all the people in my contact list ring through.

When we bought our house (1952 vintage) it had a rotary phone, and we kept it. I wanted to maybe put it back in for the hell of it but never did. We also have a a phone nook and installed a working phone from my wifes grand parents. I'm sure we've never used it except to test... and now we no longer even have a landline, so it just sits there for show.

As for the calls from the police, I was always polite to them buy said no thank you. I guess now I will just hang up.

I used to receive those calls until I purchased a telephone system that pre-screens calls. If the caller isn't on my list of acceptable telephone numbers or if not on the list and doesn't announce their name and push the # button, my phone doesn't even ring.

Edit: This is on my landline telephone system of course.

The calls from any so called "police or sheriff's" organization are scams. No law enforcement or fire, fire/rescue will call asking for donations.
Ask them to come around in a marked unit or rescue rig, and see how fast they hang up.

In the old days when I used to have a land line and got a telemarketer call I'd act really interested at first but then ask them to hold on for a minute because I had to do something real quick like check on my dinner. Then I'd set the phone down without hanging up and go about whatever it was I was doing until they eventually hung up. That way I wasted more of their time than mine. :)
