Where would be a good spot to put it?

I don't want it in the bed. I want to keep the spare tire stowed in the OEM location. I might be willing to give up the exhaust system.

Forward of the fuel tank or behind the left rear wheel are the obvious spots. I've always appreciated the way BMW mounts them out of the weather, so some of the precious little space beneath the rear seat would be an option.

Thanks.

It's a SuperCrew, if it matters. I'll take a look at it the next time I see it...

What are you making space for under the hood?

If you want to lighten it up the get a Lithium Ion battery!!! For the price of one of those you can do the same for a batter relocation as the cables with fuse blocks would have to be moved as well and that isnt worth it!!

Is there a lithium ion battery that will work in freezing temperatures?

Zero gain in doing that.

Only reason to do that is weight DISTRIBUTION or gaining SPACE under the hood. 2/0 copper cable is expensive and the frame isn't a very good ground over that distance. Nope......

Here's something to consider.

During starting, especially in cold weather, the starting amperage may exceed 400 amps! Mounting the battery say behind the rear seat, may reduce the starting amperage at the starter to less than 50% of normal. This happens because even small amounts of resistance, at high amperage, have a very pronounced effect. It is simply a case of Ohms' law!

BMW has been doing this for decades. The battery is most often st the right rear corner of the vehicle to counterbalance the weight of the driver. They're nothing special, just average sized SLA and AGM batteries. It can't be terribly difficult, or they wouldn't be doing it.

The problem with a conversion on a modern vehicle is the wiring that is done. On an older vehicle you dont have to worry as much.

Yup- the battery in my wife's BMW Track Pack car is located in the trunk, and it starts just fine.

So has every race car I've ever built with the battery in the trunk...

Ohm's Law applies to all vehicles equally.
