Does any miss having stake pockets in the side rails. I think it would nice to have so one could build some stake sides to aid in hauling say more boxes or taller objects more easily. I guess Ford thought people would overload the payload capacity, but you can do that without stake sides. ?

I was planning on using them to add a ham Radio antenna on one side and a CB antenna on the other.

I do! It's my number on complaint about the Ranger.
I didn't even know anyone made a truck without stake pockets, before I bought the Ranger. To me, it's equivalent to not providing a tailgate. I just expected them.
The boxes on mid-sized trucks need them even more than full size.

This is not a new development:
  • I had an '85 S-15... no stake pockets.
  • And (2) Tacoma's, a 93 & a 2002... no stake pockets.
  • I think the last Ford Ranger to have them was in 1994?

More information here: Where are the lumber racks?

They had them after 94, just not on ours. It's too bad, my 89 had a full up lumber rack with roof to keep the pigs enclosed on the way to the butchers. I also had them on my 95 and at the time they were available on the fleet side 03s, but since I had a flare side mine didn't have any. AFAIK they were on every fleet side right up until they stopped selling them.

These were a must have for me when I had my F150's. I used a TracRac ladder system on mine and the rubber grommets were what went into the stake pockets to secure the rack. Now l have no use for them with my Ranger but they do come in handy for others. Some off roading sites require flags to be mounted and these are a great spot for that too.

My last Ranger was an 88 and I've had full-size trucks for years. I've never needed stake pockets until the last few years, when I started building homes. In my mind stake pockets were just something that came with a truck. Trucks have boxes, boxes have stake pockets. When I bought the Ranger, I just assumed they were under the bed rails. I went outside one day and started pulling the rails off, only to find out there were no pockets. Because it was so ingrained in my mind that all trucks have pockets, I didn't even look at the inside of the box for signs of pockets, before pulling the rails off.

This too! Climbing into the box with the tailgate down is made even more difficult because there is no place to get a good grip. Especially when the truck is pointing uphill. The Sierra/Silverado have an enlarged rear pocket specifically for this purpose.

back story on stake pockets

my dad had a 1977 F150. three on the tree.
his friend had a nice big chunky gold wedding band

as my dad was leaving his friends house after drinking wobbly pops, his friend waved good bye and grabbed the bed side as the truck pulled away dumping the clutch and kicking rocks everywhere....

yep, that nice gold band caught in the stake pocket and as my dad ripped out of the driveway, his dear friend agonized in pain as his ring finger departed his body with the truck
did my dad notice? nope, not until the phone rang from his friends wife.

i recall vividly as my mom plucked the finger from the stake pocket, put it in ice and rushed it to the hospital.
Back then, attachment techniques were sub par and he lost the finger for good.
I believe they kept in a jar of formaldehyde for years.

fuck stake pockets they arent for me.
now that by god is a back story! lol ouch

Hey, "back stories" are only allow to be told by P.A.Schilke!

That's a hell of a story though. That is the reason I don't wear any rings at work. Never know what it will catch on.
Hopefully someone didn't think the finger in the jar was the worm in Tequila and guzzle it down.
Hmm, "Finger in the jar". Isn't that a country song.
