fx4 tire question/reccomendations

Hi guys,
Sorry if there's already a thread about this, I searched and couldn't find anything. So I'm ordering a ranger within the next two weeks and was doing some looking about the tires. On my xlt fx4, I would be getting dynapro atm tires LT 265/65r17. The LTs are 3 peak snowflake rated so that's better than the normal ones, but still. I looked on tire rack, and the reviews alternate between really good in snow and then really bad in snow and wet weather. I was wondering what you guys have experienced with these tires. And if they are bad could you reccomend any other at tires with the stock size? Before I canceled my bronco reservation, I was set on the general grabber atx's 265/70r17 that came on the black diamond trim. They do great in snow and wet weather, which was why I was happy with getting them. Only problem is they don't come in the stock ranger size, how much more will that size offset my odometer/speedometer ect.

I can speak from experience that the factory Hankook tires are better in snow compared to the General Grabbers. When I had MT 2016 Frontier it came with the Hankooms and I ran in snow a few times and the truck did well. When i had my 1992 Pathfinder i had the Grabbers on it and snow traction was non existent. In my honest opinion keep the factory Hankook tires.

For sure thanks! Honestly, as long as they are just as good as a good pair of a/s in the winter I'm fine, all though after having and enjoying blizzaks on my focus the last couple years, I may end up going that route if I move more north. From people who have the atx's apparently the grabbers are good, but the at2 or 3s are where it gets bad with snow. I've heard mt does worse in snow/ice compared to at, but I'm going off what I've heard, having never driven on either. Do you remember what model of grabber you have on your pathfinder by chance, just so I know what to cross off my list.

I mean I'm at 32k miles on my focus with winter tires the last 2 years and the all seasons are almost done for. As long as it's more than that I'm happy.

Depends on the tire itself. I got the ATM to last 54,000 when rated for 50,000

I live in the Pocono Mtns and we just got 24 inches of snow! I went out for a drive yesterday on a lot of un-plowed roads and I have to say the Hankooks preformed amazingly! I didn’t have one issue at all, honestly I was surprised at how well the got through 2 ft of snow!

There are a few threads dealing with tire-related issues, but to answer your question directly, in my experience (and I think most members would agree, based on their comments here) the stock Hankook tires are really not bad at all, a good all-around tire. I did not have any problems with them on the Ranger, but I decided I wanted something more aggressive and put Falken Wildpeak AT/3W on at about 10,000 miles. Again, nothing wrong with the Hankook, I just liked the Falken better.

We got our first "real" snowstorm this week in Virginia and I had to get out in it before the side roads were plowed. We got around 6 inches, which in the Richmond Virginia area can be considered apocalyptic, and the stock Hankooks did fine. I was actually impressed.

I took my Jeep (315/70R17 Toyo Open Country R/T Trail) and my Ranger FX4 with the Hankooks out to see which was best in 14"+ of fresh snow. Ranger won that one hands down. I thought it did well. Moved here from the North East US, so 35 years of driving in the snow there.

I took my Jeep (315/70R17 Toyo Open Country R/T Trail) and my Ranger FX4 with the Hankooks out to see which was best in 14"+ of fresh snow. Ranger won that one hands down. I thought it did well. Moved here from the North East US, so 35 years of driving in the snow there.

Thanks for your input. Had the ranger for a bit now and still on the stock hankook lt tires it came with. So far I can’t complain to much with it in regards to snow. I was worried before I got it because I was coming from a fwd focus with snow tires in the winter, but once I got used to it It’s pretty good even in 2wd if it’s not deep snow.

Like many members, I swapped out the stock Hankooks way before I had to (for Falcon Wildpeaks AT at c. 10,000 miles), but the Hankooks were not a bad tire in any way.
