Thoughts on pricing for a 500mi "used" 2019 XLT?

So I've come across a used 2019, with only about 500mi (and only 'first sold' on Sept 22 of 2020 - both of which I believe mean I'm basically getting a 'new' truck warranty that would still be honored by Ford, right?) being sold at Carmax, asking price is 32k + tax/title.

I took it for a test drive, and really liked it, and it's packaged/kitted almost exactly how I would have done it myself. It's a 4x4 Supercrew XLT, with the following:
  • I think 301A package?
  • FX4 package
  • Technology package
  • Tow package
There were three cosmetic things I can totally live with, but really scratching my head as to what might have caused two of these:
  1. Two scratches on the top of the dashboard, about the same distance from the side. This was the most concerning because I was thinking, what if they (ie, first owner or dealership) have replaced something with the instrument cluster/console that wasn't working? But looking at some of the tech manuals, I don't see why they would have been running a prybar/screwdriver there to pop the dash.
  2. Some little 'dents' on the plastic head-unit screen, but they are limited to the top right and bottom left corners, so I can live with this.
  3. Three tiny little paint chips but the fuel cap (I can only assume this has been refueled no more than 4-5 times, how can someone be so incompetent as to chip the paint already?!)
Finally, I felt a weird mid- to high-frequency bounce/vibration, particularly at speed of about 40-60mph, but I'm wondering if due to the low mileage + age, could the truck just have been sat on a lot or driveway, and developed flat spots? I've heard that AT tires are more prone to this.

Any thoughts or pointers for me? I'm coming from a 2008 single cab XL F150 which I've used as my daily beater for the last 6 years, so the Ranger is heaps more comfortable and drives like a sports car in comparison. I just want to make sure I look out for anything unusual.

Sounds like you will have full warranty. I'd double check the car fax and maybe see if you can get a service record if one exists from a Ford dealer using the VIN. Any warranty history should show up. Also, check the underside and body panels for signs of repair. Scratches on body and undercarriage fasteners as well as paint voids around fasteners may indicate removal and replacement of parts and body panels. Tape lines and signs of overspray in inconspicuous places may indicate paint work. Good luck. Hope it works out the way you want.

Ask for a car fax, ask for the warranty history. See if they’ll certify it, I think the certified used warranty is a lot better.

I could be completely wrong but it sounds like someone bought it and it had a bunch of issues and maybe got Lemon Lawed? Sounds odd that it has those marks on it. Like someone else said if you can get the Carfax and warranty history that would put your mind at ease or turn you away

Is this a certified pre owned from a ford dealer? As far as I know you won't get the warranty if it's not

Edit: you mentioned pricing but not the actual price. Hard to say if it's a good deal or not without knowing that

Thanks for the replies so far from everyone. I've uploaded some photos:

Dash in front of passenger (harder to see, I didn't get a great angle with the photo):

weird little dents/'chips' on the infotainment screen:

I guess primarily, I'd be wondering if anyone knew if those could have been from someone trying to disassemble the dash. I would have figured that the dealership would know how to do this without causing so much damage, unless they had a gorilla do this, and the original owner maybe got PO'ed with the dealership and got a new vehicle instead?

As for the carfax/history report, I'm buying it through Carmax so they've got as much info as I think I'd be able to get independently, unless there is a way to ask Ford to provide service history given a VIN? Not sure how that works.

There are quiet a view brand new 99's and 20's out there on the Dealer lots ! Check Corning Ford, they had last week still a 99 Lariat with all the bells and whistles on the lot beside some others. This is the biggest Ford dealer in our area. They have rely good prices, check with Todd the Internet guy. Ford does Dealer to Dealer shipping !

If nothings wrong with it I'd say that's a reasonable price. Weird for it to be traded in/sold with so few miles though so I'd definitely get a carfax. There is a ford tech/parts guy on here somewhere who might hook you up and check the vin for warranty work on it. The damage on the screen is definitely weird as generally you pull the trim around the bezel off first then unscrew/pop the bezel off.

I'd definitely be obliged if anyone can hook me up with service records. I just created an 'owners' account on Ford with the VIN, and it didn't show any service history for it. I guess that might be a good thing, unless they took it to a dealer/mechanic who doesn't report back to Ford, in which case not much I could do.

The main question I meant to ask is there any reason why a truck would be for sale with 500 miles on it? That’s hardly more than a test drive... also after seeing those pictures I would be concerned. That seems really odd

Thanks, yeah took a solid look around the truck (I'm not a professional mechanic but have maintained several personal vehicles, not afraid of getting hands dirty - done all sorts of work save for major engine/transmission rebuilds.) Didn't see any obvious signs of damage or wear&tear, underbody looked good.

I'm thinking if/when I do go ahead with the purchase, I'd take it to my local dealer and have them run the tires through an alignment/balance, and if the vibration persists, I'd try to get them to replace the tires on warranty. (Alternatively, I have a set of basically new Pirelli Scorpions on my current 08 F150 which would fit the Ranger, could try those on as well.)

Yeah for sure. I feel a bit more assured that it's basically new/under Ford warranty, so if there are other issues, then really all I'd be doing is potentially exposing myself to having it sit in the shop to get repairs. Not great, but for the price? Seems like a risk I might be alright with taking, plus I just haven't seen other XLT's with that package/spec (I want to build it out to be a tourer/overlander).

If you are buying from a FoMoCo stealership I'd insist on being able to see the service history, period. They will give you some BS about pervious owners 'privacy' so have them print and redact their personal info out.
Also what's the general rule about driving a vehicle off the lot and depreciating 20%...not sure if thats still true nationwide but I'd go 20% off of sticker. If you have good credit and can qualify for the best financing maybe wait a couple months until the economy tanks a bit more when they will really be hurting for customers [new might be more appealing to you then]. Watching the news today and somewhere between $600 billion & 1.9 trillion is the next covid 'relief' bill being considered.

The other option is you wait for me to turn 50k miles, I have serious OCD and folks line up to buy my vehicles. Got 19k now, but with the amount I'm driving I'm probably 3 years out until trade in time.

The last time I traded in a vehicle they had it sold about the time I was with the finance shark. One of the techs called dibs on it b/c he has seen it in or service before. He took it without them doing any prep on it.

This is kinda my feelings too. I'd ask to see the complete service history of the car from the dealer. I'm less concerned about the Carfax. Great for finding out if a car has been in a major wreck, but not great for finding out if the car has been in the shop several times for nuisance issues.

For the OP, If they don't give you a complete service history, and I almost guarantee there's something going on there, and I'd walk away.

Edit: Yup, this. And I'd head it off right up front about redacting previous owners info before they even get a chance to bring it up. They will be heavily looking for a reason to hide these serious nuisance problems.
