I've been watching this company on IG the past few months and I'm leaning toward this setup, but was curious if anyone has any other options out there as this company is very proud of their product. https://greymantactical.com/collect...cts/vehicleriflerack-rubberclamps-12-25x21rmp

I'm a LEO and have a duty rifle (10.3" SBR) that I carry to and from work in a bag and there's always times my wife asks for me to pick up a few items in the grocery store on the way home, but I tell her I can't. I've taken my fair share of vehicle burglaries that result in firearms being stolen and refuse to leave a firearm in a vehicle for more than a gas station stop. This particular company claims the rifle is secure with their locking system, which I agree with to an extent. I by no means would leave a rifle in a device like this for any length of time more than 30 minutes or so. Does anyone have a better solution or know of any companies out there that sell similar products to secure a rifle in our Rangers.

Just a thought but perhaps dont have firearms in the vehicle that are in an obvious spot and can be taken fairly easily? If you wish to carry that is fine by me but if theft is an issue then dont carry what will ge5 stolen. Just a common sense deal here.

I guess you missed the entire part of my post where I said I am a LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) aka a cop. There's always a gun in my automobile since I drive to and from work! Otherwise my truck is parked in my garage or at the police department's secure parking lot. I'm as pro gun security as any. One of my coworkers was shot and killed in the line of duty with a stolen gun. I can't stand when people leave their guns unsecured in their vehicles and often let them know as I'm taking the report. Might want to reread my post!

You may be inviting a hoodrat to break into your vehicle with your duty weapon clearly in site brother. I'm not familiar with the area under the back seat of a Crew Cab. If there is a way to install the unit under the rear seat then that would be a good place. I know exactly where you're coming from. One thing I would never want to do is to tell my "Lou" that my duty weapon was stolen.

Like Chis I think you may be inviting a hoodrat to break in your vehicle with your duty weapon clearly in site brother.
I'm having 15% tint on side and rear windows installed on Wednesday. It would be difficult to see inside the truck even if you cup your hands and put your face up to the window.

That's the ticket Robert. You should be good to go then. You're right though, they are proud of that little unit. But, it should do the trick. Be safe brother.

The setup in the pic has a rifle locked into a Molle backing that is also secured with a cable. Its way more secure than what any cop I work with has, myself at the moment included. I throw my rifle in a soft case and it sits on my floorboard on the to and from drive.

I did read your post. When you said LEO the only thing I could think of was tye Zodiac sign. What you should have said is you are a Law Enforcement Officer. Now with that said I am a bit confused. Why dont your Firearms stay in your squad car and take your squad car home?

I like that. Being a LEO I know you make tons of money, so 55 bucks more is like pocket change. :handsinair:

Being an advanced firearms and stops instructor I understand your post. I set up many vehicles in my 34 year career. Two things right off the bat, one is how does their molle base attach to the seat? It's like an inexpensive gun safe, if it is easily pried off and carried away its not much good.

Are your windows tinted? If so that helps hide what's in that back seat. Also maybe drap a black cloth, towel from the head rest to the floor to make the items on the molle less visible, (since the truck is a pov and not often deployed from )more benign and less attention grabbing. In my charger and Durango I kept my AR with a 30 round mag behind me. The muzzle pointed at the base of my seat between the seat and pillar, resting on the mag butt. The stock was gently pinned between the inner rear door and side of rear seat. I had a bag seat belted in that seat and had the lap portion tight on the bag but the shoulder strap loose enough to easily slip over the collapsed stock so that when I opened that back door it would not move or fall out. When deployed you could either lift up and out or a light flip of that shoulder seat belt and you pull the rifle up and out. 2 extra Mags where in the door pocket with a paper towel folded and in between the mags. Nothing moved while driving and no rattles. I hate rattles especially on those 12 hour shifts. Some preferred the rifle racks, we got forced to have an over head one, that made me bleed often. We got rid of all of them
When I retired we had just started doing installs of other styles.

If the molle you are considering bolts on that's a huge plus. If it's a nylon strap etc someone that's prepared will cut it out and take it all.

Back in the day I modified a trunk mounted 12 gauge locking rack and made new brackets and installed it straddling the transmission hump in front of the back seat. I could reach and retrieve it while driving if needed. No fancy electric locks, it had a key I used as needed.

Another option would be something like a Decked drawer system. When the tailgate is locked, the drawers cannot be accessed. There is also an option to add a lock to the drawers. That does not help if you need the rifle in the cab. If it does not need to be in the cab, the drawer system keeps it out of sight and securely locked when the truck is locked. The drawers are weather resistant. Just a thought. More money, of course, but provides a lot of additional storage. I am very happy with the Decked system in my truck. Good luck.

I work at a department with over 2000 Officers. We don't have take home patrol cars and pretty much every patrol car is shared with other Officers. I've left a pair of sunglasses in one of the cars before and the next day they were gone. Leaving anything personal inside a unit a no go.

I've seen these in the rigid and soft format and while I LOVE the concept, I wouldn't buy them or use them in a Ford Ranger. I would have used them in the trunk of my Fusion.

Here's why..... Anything that looks tactical invites eyes. Tactical people usually. Just curious about your setup and looking for best practices. But also people on the grift - looking to get "stuff" whether it be a rifle, pistol, medical gear, flashlights, money, you name it.

If I store a long gun in my truck it will be BEHIND the back seat where I can use big ugly bolts to make sure it is solidly mounted and the gun will be out of sight.

In your case, if you do want to carry behind the passenger seat for easier access - Interior will be all black, gun will be all black, maybe add a sock or something so it looks less gun-ey and windows will be tinted as dark as legally allowed. Use a sun shield on the dash to keep interior light low when it is parked - even in the winter this is a bout visibility not UV damage. Even if they can't get your rifle, you don't want them to shatter a window and grab other stuff like radios and a $200 bag of equipment and ammo. I had a buddy get a $25 baofeng radio stolen out of his front seat like that. Damage to the window was waaaaay more than the cost of the radio.

Question though.......
Can't you get one of those locks like we see in patrol cruisers? The ones where the shotgun or AR rides in the passenger footwell and points up? Maybe that would work in the back?
