20" vs 17"

Im still on my quest in near future to order some RTR black satin wheels, but man I am really torn on what size to go with. My current Toyo AT2 tires only have 3000 miles on them, so benefit to staying with 17" is saving money.

But damn... 20" looks so good...

Opinions vary. I hate big wheels with rubber band tires. The more sidewall... the better.

I'd keep the 17's, but with larger diameter tires. It proportionally just looks right on a truck ... and on Hot Rods too.

Especially on your "purpose built" truck.

That is another route, I just hate ditching perfectly good tires. I'm not sure how much larger I can go (33s currently) with just a 2.5" front lift with no crash bars.

Jack, if you are going offroad I wouldn't go with the 20's. By the time you air them down there is no protection for the rims. Bret

Light trail duty / camping is all I had planned, other than that it is basically a man-cave on wheels.

Your truck looks great now. I would save the cash and keep your tires and put on RTR wheels. 20 inch rims dent real easy offroading especially when aired down.

Given the same overall diameter. 20s will offer a better look and on-road handling at the expense of ride quality and higher purchase price.
17s generally will have a better ride and off-road durability.
The caveat is tuning the suspension for what your purpose is regardless of size.

Stick with your 17” there are a variety of tire options and all at good prices, plus you will not have to do much modding to get to a 33”
I run 285/65-18’s and +30 offset. I only have a 3” level spacer and no rubbing at full lock in forward and reverse.

Here's my opinion..I bought the 20" factory package when I got my '09 Ram. They look cool and fill out the wells nice BUT the factory tires made it ride like a cement truck. Last 2 sets were Coopers and were a huge difference. Everyone I talk to that I know that have that size or sell them say they seem to wear faster, I rotate them every other LOF and that seems to help.
I also know quite a few folks with the smaller factory size and I'd have to confirm that they do ride a lot softer...and that's a much larger vehicle. If it were me I'd want to ride in one before spending all that cash to swap. JMO.

17 will give you a better ride (and save you some money, as you say); but, damn, 20 will look so cool. It all depends on what you want. (I couldn't decide either, and ended up rolling on 18 now!)

That's really a matter of personal taste--as others have suggested, I think big wheels look idiotic and they make me wonder if someone doesn't understand why the rubber is there at all. To each their own.
