I wish some of you lived closer to give me a slap in the head. A ways back, I talked about not letting 2H ego get in the way, and put it in 4H, when you should.

So my wife and I in the Ranger, head up the steep icy driveway. (Not to go look at submarines) The sand I had put down at 6:30 am had mostly washed away. I told my wife I would try it in 2H, that way we would know if her Fit could make it up.

We go up 2/3rds of the way with minimal slippage, but the top 1/3 is the steepest, especially the last truck length or so. You also have to pause to make sure nothing is coming because of the sightlines. I started to get slippage and the backend started to go out. I flipped it in 4H and I don’t know if it did not kick in right away, or if it was just so steep and Icy, that it was doomed to fail, but I started to go backwards. I put the brakes on and thankfully the truck stopped. The ditch either side at that location is deep. Not so deep that you would tumble down and blow up and there is no lava in it, but knarly enough you would have to call a tow truck to get out.

I looked in the mirror and my back wheels were near the edge. I was just able to back down enough to be in a less steep location. I put it into 4H and drove up easily.

No more 2H chances.

While I was out, I got 6 more pails of pickled sand and put 4 more on the driveway. It has gotten cooler now, the rain has stopped and we are now waiting for the snow.

This really has been a light snow season so far. It is the one day melts, then freezing, that makes things more challenging.

I don't even mess with 2WD if there is snow on the ground. My foot is too heavy to begin with so all I hear are the sounds of spinning then stop, spinning then stop. Wash rinse repeat.

As seen here today. Not all that much snow... Whats happening here is the packing of the yard where later snows will be push over on the way to dump area's. Does that make any sense??

So far just rain, but it turned my long, steep driveway into a sheet of pure ice. Impossible to walk up. Fortunately I keep 3, 5 gallon pails of pickled sand at the top and I had to use all three to make the driveway safe. I did it all by flashlight in the dark, so we will see if it is good enough. I have six more pails of pickled sand in my truck that I use as weight. It looks like the snow will fall later today and mostly tomorrow.
What is pickled sand?

Ha! I thought I must be the only one that didn't know. Quick Google search - Salt and sand mix. Just to think that I associate pickles with vinegar.

It is sand with a little bit of rock salt mixed into it. That is what they put on our roads. They let the residents of our Municipality, have free access to their stock pile of it.
Thank you! That’s nice of them to let you use it. :)

Got a pretty good snow last night. What was predicted to be one to two inches ended up 6-8. The plow crew did a lousy job on my condo parking lot. Ranger handled it all today. Got gas at a station that wasn't plowed an in 4H it rolled right through. FYI I'm riding on the factory duelers
