I used to own 4 Mazda's. and on all of them the RPMs at startup ran higher on a cold engine than a warm engine. could be why it sounded louder than normal.

Talk about noise, I recently watched the video of the overseas XLT 3.2 diesel with a stick & rh drive. Has to be a stump puller with 370 torque. Def a louder truck.

Should be metal front & back.
