Ice Build Up In Wheel Wells

Anybody had issues with ice and snow accumulating in the wheel wells?

We drove 90 miles today in some truly crappy weather: snow and slush for about 30 miles, then another 50 miles in temperatures that were in the teens, then another 10 miles in temp's that were in the mid to upper 30's. Once we got back close to home we headed for the car wash.

I noticed a rubbing sounds coming from the front end when turning and knew it was probably ice build up.

Sure enough when I got out at the manual car wash their was about 3" of ice built up. Of course the rear wheel well wasn't an issue, but the front was basically a mold that surrounded the front tires.

Our FX4 has the stock OEM tires, and stock ride height.

Have any of you folks that are running oversize tires had any issues with this? Seems like it could do some damage at some point if the ice got thick enough.

As a side note: The Shrockworks Rocksliders we installed did a fabulous job of keeping the ice off the truck... but it was a bitch to get the ice out of the rocksliders. No worries, but just wanted to mention that.

I wish I would have taken pictures of all the above.... maybe next time.

Was worried about the same thing but driving 40 miles of snow covered road with the Weathertech flaps I haven't accumulated more than 1-2" of snow on the flaps and nowhere else in the wheel well.

One kick and it drops to the ground.

If I don't knock the snow off the rims and park overnight it's like adding wheel wights to one side of the tire and you will shake loose a few fillings when get up to hwy speed.

Never had this issue with my '02 Tacoma TRD in the 17 years we owned it.

Then you have been very lucky. Snow/ice/slush build up in the wheel wells is the probably the 2nd most common winter occurrence short of a salt covered body. I probably have to knock stuff off/out once every couple weeks and definitely after every storm. Has happened with every me and my family have ever had.

When clear, apply a spray wax Armor All or ceramic wax. Might reduce buildup. Worth a try.

I've used Armour All on the wheel wells for years....makes the build-up come right off with a little tap from my boot. I also apply some 303 to the door seals which prevents them from freezing to the door jamb

I'm more drawn to the 30 vehicles owned in 50 years. You either have a buying problem or a hoarding problem. haha

Its what happens.

Same here in 'Sconnie. Just rub the wheel wells with cheese in the fall.

Snow buildup will occur more easily driving on unplowed, untreated roads, regardless of the depth.

Just a crap car problem. Paid $50 for a 1969 toyota station wagon. Drove it 3 months before engine blew. Then a $50 dollar vega that lasted 2 months.

Think i went through 5 cars that year. Spent under $400 for all of them

Cheaper than a car payment.

Ahh, one of those types of deals. One of my buddies families in HS was like that too. They would buy old broken vehicles for cheap, then fix them up for cheap because they knew how, then drive them for a year or two until they broke down for good, and just restarted the process. I always admired them for doing that. I just don't have the skill or the time to do it.
