If you stick to the stock size for winter you will find tons of options, tires that will not look aggressive, look tiny on the truck yet do the job perfectly. You can do whatever you want spring->autumn.

This is a good video: .
Good video. I wish other manufactures did this as well.

Is it sort of a proven thing that going to a thinner tire is better in the snow?

My xlt/fx4 ranger will have 265/65R17 and the plan is to have winter tires mounted on steelies, so I could go to 245/75R16 and everything would be the same for circumference/diameter and be thinner but have more sidewall - but I wonder if its worth it, or just stick with winter tires the same size as the stock ones..

Sorry, don't want to hijack the thread but I thought since we're on the subject of winter tires...

Also, I didn't like Blizzak's at all and I think the best winter ties for snow I had were plain old Uniroyal Tigerpaw

From what I've read it depends on the snow type. Wider will allow more flotation over deep powder. Thinner will push down to packed snow better.

But with the greater sidewall you could air down to increase footprint more for rolling over deep powder.

Ended up with Cooper Snowclaw. Dedicated snow tire, recommended for our area by local garage. Spoke highly of Wildpeaks but said they won't fair as well as the Coopers, as they are not a true snow tire. Still looking for some used 17" rims....

Should be a good choice for you. I ran some Cooper, Evolution I think they were, snow tires on my FiST and was very happy with them.

I was going to leave the AT/M on the Factory Black rims as use them for my winter driving but:

-They were not impressive in snow, slush or rain when I had them on in the spring (~1500 km)

- I hate the white lettering out on my black/black/black truck.

- My summer/off-road tires are 32.7" so the factory spare is no good, and I have to carry a full size spare when they are on.

- I did a 3.5 inch lift for the 32.7 tires, but the AT/M are only 30.6 which looks too small for the truck, especially with the white lettering out.

So, I have decided to suffer the $ loss, and replace the like new AT/M with 255/70-18 Bridgstone X-Ice Snow tires, including the spare. At 32.1" the new spare will be big enough to use with my off-road tires too, so I won't need a spare tire in my box on on the tonneau cover for daily driving.

I have the Toyo ATIII's and they are three peak winter rated. I just used them on a dirt road with about 3-4 inches of wet snow and they performed really well. I didn't put it into 4x4 once, tried the diff lock to help me turn around at the top though
good to know, that's what I just bought.
