Long story short, my Ranger was stolen with what I suspect was my lost key (which went missing the day prior). Thanks to the GPS I was able to locate and retake possession of the vehicle in less than 24 hours.

I was able to get a brand new key (aftermarket) rekeyed and reprogrammed along with my spare for a total cost of $240 out the door all within a couple of hours.

My missing key can still be used to get into the locked vehicle but it will not be able to start the engine. I'm also hoping the alarm will sound when they try to enter the vehicle

Can anyone confirm?

Retired, work is a four letter word.
I am confused?? was the truck stolen? or you just lost the key and are worried about it being stolen with that lost key? Or was it stolen and recovered?

I would think if the two new keys are reprogrammed then the unlocking of the door would be like sticking your hand through the window and unlocking and opening the door, which triggers the alarm. I don't think the truck alarm cares about the key it cares about the programmed part of the key holder.

I thought you could remove old keys from the vehicle memory making them no longer a working key. I assumed this stopped them from opening the doors on the newer more tech cars.

With my past F1 50s, if I unlocked the door with the programed key, it still set the alarm off. I hated that! It just didn’t know The difference between a key unlocking the door and somebody using a coat hanger or something.
But it stops alarming as quick as you can get that key in the ignition and turn it on

Does anybody know if there's any truth to this and if so, how it might be accomplished?

I don't think so. A cut key is a cut key, unless you replace the tumbler mechanism its still the same lock.
I was thinking of the remote entry I forgot about the manual key in the door.

I would head to the dealer right away and see what options there are. I wouldn't have peace of mind until I know my vehicle was 100% secure, especially if it's already been stolen.

Either that or get an old school steering wheel lock, the big red ones. But you're still at risk of that person coming in and vandalizing or stealing stuff from inside.

They can't start the ignition since I've already had the keys reprogrammed so a steering wheel lock isn't going to do much but as you've mentioned they can still get into the vehicle and do whatever they want.

I have already been to the stealership and was fed a bunch of nonsense. They told me my remaining spare could no longer be reprogrammed and instead I would have to buy two brand new keys to be reprogrammed to the tune of $700+. I wouldn't trust them as far as I can throw them.

The only way to make the vehicle truly secure would be to rekey the locks on the doors. In that case, given the cost to perform a job like this, I'll take my chances ??

Hopefully they come back and we can have a little talk...

If you reported your truck stolen to the local Leo, and you self recovered it, be sure to let the reporting officer know you recovered it so they can remove it from the computer as stolen. I stopped a few "stolen vehicles" in my career that had the owner driving it, they failed to let Leo know.

Did you ask how much it would be for a new steering column lock, 2 door locks an a tailgate lock replacement with 2 keys programed to match. You could throw an old key into the glovebox for the cover for the spare tire release.

I would think if it was push start (no ignition key) then it would set off the alarm because of a reprogrammed key fob was not detected upon entry, at least while there is battery power to detect the fob… just my thought…
