I have a tool kit of both I keep under the front seat. Plus a bunch of other random tools I keep under the back seat. Hammers, adjustable wrenches, hose clamps, zip ties etc. I haven’t needed any for the Ranger when I’m not at home but have used them countless times on other things. Definitely keep multiple 10mm sockets. Those things disappear for some reason lol. I also keep a wiring kit with crimps and extra wire. They are priceless when you tow trailers a lot. Everyone gives me crap for being over prepared. But the same people have been bailed out from me being over prepared?

Pretty much anything under the hood going bad will require a code reader to read any code that shows up. Not too much that happens under the hood or trans can be fixed on the side of the road.
If you don't have one, an owners manual or copies of the pages showing the position/location of the different fuse panels would help, and what the fuses power.
General metric tools including several 10 mm wrenches and sockets, a set of torx and allen (metric) wrenches, roll of duct or Gorilla tape, a roll of "bailing wire", some screw drivers, pliers (definitely a pair of needle nose), hammer or good rubber mallet. Assortment of zip ties, spare fuses.
Small multi meter....nothing fancy....just enough to see what's what.
Unless you go offroad or far outback, you shouldn't need anything larger than a 3/8 inch drive set.
I carry much more, but I tow a travel trailer, and keep tools for it.
Funny thing tho....I have used more of my stuff to help others than needed for my own use.

Is that Crescent Wrench, left handed or right handed?
Strangely, mine are SAE on one side, and metric on the other. I've found if the wrench doesn't fit, I can flip it over and like magic, it fits.
But it does lack the arrow to tell you which way to turn it.
It's all so confusing that I don't use it very often.
edit - (yes, that is both side of one wrench).

DAMN !!!!! DOUBLE DAMN !!!! I have several Craftsman crescent wrenches and DAMN if they all have metric on one side and SAE on the other !!!!!
In all my grumpy old years, I never never noticed that !!!!!
Now, the question comes to the forefront of need to know.....
When you place the wrench on a nut/bolt head, how does it know if it is metric or SAE ???? What happens if you put the metric side on an SAE head, or vice versa ?????
To clarify.....what happens if you place the SAE side up on a metric head and vice versa....does the wrench refuse to turn.....does it self adjust.....MUST KNOW !!!!!
And, with no arrows how do you know which way to turn/push/pull it ??? Just guess ???
All these new questions that need answers !!!!

Weird huh? You're not alone.
Many of the guys I worked with didn't notice that either, and that's with our company tool box loaded with Craftsman adjustable wrenches.
Something that make Craftsman that much more versatile than the rest!

I have found all these questions can be answered by the correct size wrench for the job. Hence my knuckle buster comment LOL

Wish this guy would come back and post on that bed system.
I want something like that. I don't want to put holes in the bed.

I recommend carrying one entire 10R80 transmission + a trolley jack, and the tools to remove and refit.

Getting back to the original question, did you have a tool kit for the Chevy Silverado? Would it do the job? I can't think of any specialty tools that the Ranger might need.

All the typical auto stores have a few tools kits of varying quality, and Fleet Farm has them also.

And what P. A. Schilke said

And, to paraphrase GTGallop sort of,

No joke, get a 10mm socket of every type. 1/4" & 3/8" drive, regular & deep, and every other version there is. They probably won't be part of the kit.
