I lived in WV for many years as a kid and a teenager. My dad worked in coal and we moved around a bit throughout the state. It is really beautiful country and totally underrated. It tends to get a bad reputation as a state filled with uneducated people and a lot of other negative stereotypes that are not really true. But the people of West Virginia that I grew up knowing were hard working, family oriented, good people for the most part.

Of course there are still very impoverished areas where the people that live there do not have a lot of opportunities, just like most states. But overall I think West Virginia has some of the more friendly people I have seen through my travels across the US and several places overseas.

Anyway, I'm rambling here. West Virginia certainly is a great place to explore. If you have not been there check out some online guides for places to visit. There are a ton of great things to see and good people to meet. One place I always liked was Holly River State Park. We used to go camping there a lot. Also don't forget to get a pepperoni roll if you visit WV. They seem like a simple food but they are really good if you get them from the right place. :)

The pacific north west right now has a movement where parts of eastern Oregon and Washington want to combine with Idaho because of voting/cultural differences.

Let’s do it bros. These modern state lines don’t mean shit anymore.
That would be the State of Jefferson

You probably know this, but I believe Pepperoni rolls were invented in WV, or at least the Appalachian coal areas. Seems odd. I think it was immigrants working in the mines and needed an easy food to carry. I've spent a lot of time in WV, and I've never seen one. ;)

Yep from what I recall they were indeed originally made as an easy food for miners. It's been a long time since I had one. We used to get them at a family owned convenience store/gas station that I think made their own. That was back in the early 80's. Not many of those kind of places still around anymore. But I always enjoyed them.

I believe they are a little more common in the northern part of the state. Out of interest I just did a google search and it seems many of the suggested places now are in Fairmont, Clarksburg and Morgantown which seems to support that and Fairmont is where I used to get them as a kid. Admittedly when I go back to WV these days I have not really looked for them as I usually drive straight through to visit family. I tried making my own a few years back but they didn't turn out very good. Anyway if you are around the areas listed above I recommend looking for some. :)

Well, I think 'pepperoni rolls' are generally popular in WV.
AS they should be, they're terrific!
I frequent the SW area of the state, and the folks there are pretty proud of them!
I've tried to make them, here in MA, but they're not the same.
I wonder if they're keeping the secret to themselves?

Anyway, if you haven't had them there, you should.

I'll try to search them out next time I'm there. I saw a food show detailing 'local' traditions and did a piece on them. Seem pretty simple, but it's all about the dough, naturally.

P.S….. for as much hype as Colorado gets, I was expected to be blown away. Sure, areas with lots of pine, and huge mountains, but also a lot of just openness and sky. Huge long grades when driving, but nothing like some back road short curves, no guard rail pucker factor like WV lol.
Yep. Colorado is hideous. Horrible weather too. Tell all your friends it's a waste of time.

Seriously though. There was once a West Virginian who thought quite highly of our fine state. Matter of fact he wrote songs about each of them and their individual beauties.

Perhaps you never found the right spots for your guardrail, or lack therof, pucker factor. You gotta get off the interstates. PPIHC is good for that. Although it's all paved nowadays.

John Denver said:
Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growin' like a breeze
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
John Denver said:
When he first came to the mountains his life was far away
On the road and hanging by a song
But the string's already broken and he doesn't really care
It keeps changing fast and it don't last for long
But the Colorado rocky mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullabye
Rocky mountain high (Colorado)
Rocky mountain high (Colorado)
What's a guardrail?
