I lived in WV for many years as a kid and a teenager. My dad worked in coal and we moved around a bit throughout the state. It is really beautiful country and totally underrated. It tends to get a bad reputation as a state filled with uneducated people and a lot of other negative stereotypes that are not really true. But the people of West Virginia that I grew up knowing were hard working, family oriented, good people for the most part.
Of course there are still very impoverished areas where the people that live there do not have a lot of opportunities, just like most states. But overall I think West Virginia has some of the more friendly people I have seen through my travels across the US and several places overseas.
Anyway, I'm rambling here. West Virginia certainly is a great place to explore. If you have not been there check out some online guides for places to visit. There are a ton of great things to see and good people to meet. One place I always liked was Holly River State Park. We used to go camping there a lot. Also don't forget to get a pepperoni roll if you visit WV. They seem like a simple food but they are really good if you get them from the right place.
