I volunteered to transport 429 dogs over 30,000 miles in five years between rescues up till the virus hit. It was very satisfying and sad at the same time. Most of them were mistreated, throw away, owner passed away, listed as mean, or other excuses. The satisfying part was knowing that I was part of a team of drivers that was giving the dogs a second chance. The sad part was letting them go at the end of the transport. Attached are a few pics of the various transports. Some of my “friends” wanted to get involved until they found out it didn’t pay anything. I told them if you’re in it for the money, you’re in it for the wrong reasons.

I have adopted two Dachshunds that were transported by the Weiner Express from the Carolinas to us in Massachusetts. Each volunteer drives a 50 to 75 mile leg and some will keep the dogs overnight.

Yep. I moved a few of them as well. My route usually was from South Hill to Richmond, NC to Fredericksburg, Richmond to Lynchburg, and the like. I did take two dogs all the way to Atlanta from Richmond on one trip. The coordinators tried to keep the runs to around two hours one way.
The white dog was deaf and mistreated and he was just so sweet and very hard to let go. The Pit actually burned up in a house fire in his new home a few months later which just tore me up.

I adopted this TWC when she was just two hours from the kill room. I saw her pic that a friend sent me behind the chain link next to the kill room. She had tears in her eyes cause she knew what was coming next but my friend pulled her just in time hoping I would adopt her. It was a no brainer YES.

I lost her two years ago next month and still miss her every day.
They do in fact have feelings as evidenced by the tears in her eyes. She was in a kill shelter in this pic just a few hours from the kill room when a friend pulled her at the last minute hoping I would save her. That was nine years ago now and she will never have that fear or another worry.

Her write up from the shelter;

Hi there.... I'm Candy, named after the very nice lady that found me a home. I'm about 2 years old and I will be traveling with a health cert. I need you to help me get to my new owner....my new family, the man that saved me from death row. I was in the final hours of count down with tears in my eyes, I was thinking no one wanted me. I began to cry and ask why? I'm a loving girl, very friendly... I couldn't understand why every one just looked over me...

But then it happened.!!!

I got the news that changed my life for ever! I was adopted.!!!

Someone I've never met wants ME!

Someone I've never met LOVES ME!! Someone I've never met is giving me a a furever home!

I'm so excied and hate that I have to wait till the weekend to travel but that is when everyone can pitch in and move me along down the road. Please help me get to my new owner.... My family... My furever home..!!

Thanks to that nice lady for pulling me in the nick of time and several Pilots n Paws folks, I am enjoying a very good life.

Back when we were in university, I got my now-wife a cat for her birthday. It was a group project, with a bunch of friends chipping in for supplies (cat bed, scratching post, cat "toiletries", etc.) while I footed the bill for the cat at the Humane Society. A buddy and I "kidnapped", blindfolded her and brought her to the Humane Society, while the other friends "broke into" her apartment to drop off the supplies.

She ended up getting this cat that had been there for nearly six months because it came with a thick medical waiver and disciplinary form; most people didn't bother even looking past how many pages that document covered and just walked on by. This cat knew that she was for the chopping block, so didn't even bother to cozy up to us, but something about her compelled my wife to actually read the forms.

The medical part was related to a broken hind leg that hadn't healed properly. I myself had wrecked my knee in a training accident while in the service, so I could relate to that pretty well. The disciplinary part was because this cat was dropped off at the Humane Society for being "unruly". She was a year old when she got dropped off, yet had experience with children aged 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10 and 10+. Between that experience and the broken leg that they never bothered to treat, we decided that the cat wasn't the problem in that household and took a chance on her.

The staff were so happy that we were taking her that instead of giving us the usual cardboard carrier, they sent her off in style in a proper carrier (happily, not one of the items that our friends had picked up, so it was a bonus birthday gift for my wife). We gave that cat a good life for the next 13 years until she passed away, and during many a cold seasons, the cat and I would take over the entire couch with both of our legs locked up and stretched out due to the cold affecting our respective injuries. Despite griping endlessly about how we weren't sharing the couch with her, my wife decided to keep us both.

We foster bottle baby kittens when we can. I'm blessed to have a schedule that allows me to do it. This is our latest foster fail.. Biskit. We got her at 2 weeks old. They found her after a storm in a drain with other kittens. The odd thing was she was to young to he apart of the litter. So no answer to where she came from.

I helped my friend adopt this sickly looking Maine Coon from a pound in Elizabeth City years ago. He was so sick we didn’t know if he would even make it back to Virginia. She spent thousands to get him healthy and as you can plainly see, he turned out to be a big healthy boy.

God bless you!

I am a big dog person. I just lost my rescued Mastiff about a month ago.. Had him for 2 years till his kidneys gave out. Still get choked up when I think about him.

I know the feeling, I miss my hound dog every day still. They only break our hearts one time.
