I have 2019 and I noticed my USB CarPlay hub “not” working correctly. It does work but I’m at a lost on why it works for some devices and not others?

Hopefully someone had this experience or has an idea of the problem. And fyi, Apple support is dogs#it and useless.

These are the issues.

Left USB:
  • Plug in my Apple data/charge cable for my iPhone 16 and CarPlay doesn’t work, but charging works.
  • Plug in my radar detector cable, doesn’t power on the unit at all.
  • If I plug different devices into this port to charge a device, it works.

Right USB:
  • Plug in my radar detector and it powers on, no problem.
  • Plug in my Apple data/charge cable for my iPhone 16 and CarPlay works good, but the trucks mic is not working, but only for calls and messaging apps. Do a voice recording use the app and mic works. To have a phone conversation, I have to disconnect the cable and use Bluetooth to have a conversation. My phone is up to date.
**I just recently got the iPhone 16 a month ago, prior I had a iPhone 11 and everything worked with it, including both USB ports for the phone and CarPlay.

I did a reset of the infotainment system, not factory reset, but I believe it’s up to date. I’ve disconnected and then re-paired my iPhone to the system, enabling Siri, still the same problems.

If I plug my radar detector into any of the two 12v sockets with a USB adapter, it works.

So any ideas on what is happening? Is it a faulty or failing USB hub, or what?

Turned out to be the cable from the hub to apim on mine. My problem was reading USB's.

I believe that Bluetooth is always the way the phone is connected for hands free phone functions, even if you have the USB cable connected. The USB cable is used for CarPlay functions. Do you have Bluetooth enabled when the USB cable is attached?

Today I bought a new USB to USB C cable from Burlington, the clothing store, it’s a JSAUX branded cable. I plugged it in the LEFT port and now my phone works like it should when in the left port.
I have 3 other high quality USB cables, including an actual Apple cable, and none of them worked in that left port. But this JSAUX cable for some reason works.
Also now when the cable is in the left port and plugged into my iPhone, the trucks mic works too when having a phone conversation.
My power USB cable for my radar detector still doesn’t power the unit from the left port, go figure.
I have no idea why this JSAUX cable works and the others do not, mystery for now.

Often what happens over time is the woven "grounding" sheath around the cable will wear at points where the hard plastic meets the cable and cause the cable to start to fail. I just find that replacing cables on a semi (maybe every few years) regular basis works as best as I can tell. Even then, some of the newer cables I try just are wonky, don't work, etc. I have no clue at the end of the day and hope the amazon reviews are semi accurate.

Yeah it’s strange with these cables. The one I’m currently using works great. I bought an almost identical, same brand, cable on Amazon and it doesn’t work. I wish I had kept the box of the one that worked so I know exactly what model number it is at least. One of these days I’m going to buy a new USB hub and see if that’s where the problem is. In a way I hope it is, because I don’t want to have to go through trial and error to find a working cable, especially if this cable takes a s#it on me.

I think it's just the nature of the beast with these cheapo cables (that are still marked up like 1000%) from who knows where.
