I can see it happening in big metro areas.

I mean, if you've ever driven in New York City, you know what a PITA it is so most people park outside the city and taxi or train into it.

I can easily see somewhere like Los Angeles or San Francisco eventually banning private vehicles inside the city limit and forcing you to take the bus/train/e-taxi/ or whatever to get around once inside.
NYC has always been car adverse. My aunt and uncle lived in Manhattan in the early 60's and had a VW Beetle that they kept parked in White Plains. They kept it there because the only time they used it was to drive to Albany occasionally or their cabin in Maine. Parking in Manhattan was $60 a month for an outdoor single parking space: about $560 in today's dollars!

I don't believe it will be a federal mandate, I am leaning toward a type of subscription whereby you buy a monthly/ annual subscription. Large corps like, google, apple, amazon will take over the transportation industry selling the subscriptions for autonomous vehicles. No need for parking lots, in downtown areas, just think about how much land is used in the urban areas for parking alone. Will be govenments who start the ball rolling?, well we all know the answer to that, but I believe it will be large corps who keep the ball rolling.......
God I never thought Hell would be a world ran on SUBSCRIPTION BASED SERVICES

In Oregon they have been talking for a while about taxing mileage on all vehicles. One thing that would do is make the electric vehicle pay there fair share?? But they never fix all the roads, or widen the lanes that need to be added and on an on. That would kill me with three vehicles. The insurance on the three is high as it is. When will it ever stop going up? Probably never. Sad but true. Nothing ever really goes down. I do really enjoy driving as long as it's not in stupid traffic. OK rant over.

I can see this happening more with the big push to EV's. Sure they can raise electric rates but only so much because we need it for our homes/businesses too. But don't think for one minute taxing by the mile isn't the main goal here to makeup for the loss gas tax revenue.

WOW! Long way from Manhattan to White Plaines, I used to drive a bus from Newberg to Manhattan (45th & Broadway) And yes driving was a PIA, what with kamikaze taxis and all. Most New Yorker's don't have cars these days, cost way to much for a parking spot. I took the wrong exit one time and drove all the way down 2nd AVE one time, that was an eye opener!

True that!, Calif has already proposed basing car registration on miles driven. As for solar the electric companies are already losing a lot of money so have increased the 'Basic' grid connection fee from $14 5 years ago to $26 now, and I see it going up, as a 'Fee' is not considered a 'Rate' increase.

If the cavemen would have only thought of this 10,000 years ago, the galciers wouldn't have melted, and we wouldn't have those nasty Great Lakes to worry about. Just think, no lake effect snows........:)

No wait.....OK, maybe....nope, I'm stickin' with that. :turkey: :turkey: :turkey:

You know, there aren't just that many people that think the way that these people think. But somehow, that small group of people have managed to elevate themselves into positions of authority over the rest of us. You can see their fingerprints on just about everything around us these days.

My brain just clicked.

This is already happening in National Parks.

Back in the early 90's when I just got married, my wife and I visited the Grand Canyon.

You could drive pretty much anywhere.

On our most recent visit when we took our boys, you parked at the visitor center and take a bus into the park.

well I think global warning will result in mass migrations to more temperate climes - like Canada, so get ready for "our tired, our poor, our huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of our teeming shore. "

eh

Dinasaur Nat'l Monument was still optional bus-to-exhibits in 2018, don't know what they do now; avoid close contact on busses or stop burning dinosaur poop in the Monument.
