NYC has always been car adverse. My aunt and uncle lived in Manhattan in the early 60's and had a VW Beetle that they kept parked in White Plains. They kept it there because the only time they used it was to drive to Albany occasionally or their cabin in Maine. Parking in Manhattan was $60 a month for an outdoor single parking space: about $560 in today's dollars!I can see it happening in big metro areas.
I mean, if you've ever driven in New York City, you know what a PITA it is so most people park outside the city and taxi or train into it.
I can easily see somewhere like Los Angeles or San Francisco eventually banning private vehicles inside the city limit and forcing you to take the bus/train/e-taxi/ or whatever to get around once inside.
