Dang, that’s rough, but it appears they are going to do right by the consumers who purchased… so that’s good… maybe that’s why the new Tacoma didn’t get a v6tt for the 2024 model and pushed it back to possibly being available in 2025.
I would be surprised if the Tacoma ever got the v6, or at least the same v6 that’s in the Tundra. The 4-hybird makes plenty of power for the Tacoma, at least on paper.

Wow, rough, but good on them.

OT: My tranny started showing some beginning signs of rough shifting today on my 2 hour drive back home. I'm not too concerned, yet, but leaning towards getting the fluid changed. I have about 21.5K miles now on my 2020 truck.

I also had filled out a survey from my dealer about my last service visit where they replaced the airbox under warranty. They had to take the seats out, and I noticed there were some minor scratches on the door jam. They are 'inside', not visible from outside when the door is shut. I didn't really bitch about it, but said they should take better care and cover up the paint when they do that stuff.

A dealer rep contacted me about brining it back in to resolve it, and said they'd cover the next service visit. I asked what exactly that would be and it will be oil change, tire rotation and fluids. I am happy about that. It was good customer service, IMO. Not sure I will let them do the trans fluid, or, maybe I should instead of going to my normal independent shop. What is your guys opinion?

True not the thundra v6tt, but Toyota has been looking into making the TRD pro trim more prestigious (think Tacoma TRD off-road vs ranger Tremor, Tacoma TRD pro vs Ranger Raptor.).. the f150 Raptor got a 3.5 v6tt (I’m pretty sure.. aside from the v8 available during certain gens.) and the Ranger Raptor Raptor and I think the bronco Raptor got 3.0 v6tt.. sooo transfer that ideology tundra 3.x v6tt to the Tacoma trd pro 3.x v6tt…. (Slightly smaller for the premium taco.).. but I’m just purely speculating and it makes sense in my head. Basically since their v6tt setup had some issues they pulled the idea till they figured out their tech so it could be implemented… again just me thinking not based on fact just observing and reading buzz topics per se.

Do you still have the bumper to bumper warranty. It’s a shame about the techs being careless, however the dealer service rep seems to take even slight situations seriously so that speaks towards taking care of customers.. my understanding is the ones performing the lighter labor and technical aspects are the newer to the trade technicians..
Transmission service may or may not be delegated towards their transmission technician… one way that may get it to the more experienced transmission technician would be to bring it in with the in concern about the shifting and that you have read about how there is heavy concerns about the rangers transmission (or something like that.)..

truly i have seen some stuff that’s made me feel like i got lucky with having a really good dealership and their service department.. got my truck slightly under msrp, very careful techs (they throw soft Mats over everything.), service manager is definitely a down to earth human being.. I recently went to inquirer about having them do a bedliner for me, he said let me tell you where we send our trucks to get the bed liners done it’ll be less expensive.. he was correct.. but I have to wait till august 8th for the shop to do it.. only 2 days after ford would be able to and about $150 under the dealer price.)..
So my experience with dealership seems to be uncommon..

if you don’t have warranty coverage you may want to just go with who you trust to be a highly skilled mechanic.

this is all just based on personal experience so cannot guarantee you’ll have the same luck with getting a dealership over a stealership

The TRD Pro is already a midsize truck selling for about $70k. How much more prestigious do they want it to be?

I found a third gen Tundra owner that was quoted $32,000 for a replacement engine. So that'll be $3,266,944,000. Not to mention their stock is looking like this:

True, but that is the dealer's inflated price I wonder how much it really costs Toyota to build these engines. For example the 3.2 i5 diesels used in the Aus Rangers had a nasty habit of overfueling and melting or cracking pistons. ( due to failing injectors) People were quoted ridiculous prices like 20 to 30 thousand to replace the engines by dealers if out of warranty. You could / can buy new crate engines on e-bay for ~$7-8000. Any competent mechanic could do an engine swap for a grand or two.

That’s expensive not prestigious IMO ?..
Maybe I’m using words incorrectly..(which is entirely possible lol)
I meant performance based..and more competitive against the Ranger Raptor in a way… because previously it’s basically just a worked out suspension and tire wheel pkg, I think trail control electronics, maybe a locker too idk haven’t really kept up on the taco …the taco trd pro is like a tremor ?… when the PRO should be more like a Raptor competition. especially at that price point. (Which I’m pretty sure the Ranger Raptor even squeaks under 70k price point.)
Realistically the taco trd pro almost got my business since it was available in manual transmission (which is basically a form of anti theft these days too.) but anyway again I don’t have any real backable information about all this… just me speaking from my brain out my bum.

I am 4 months out of my 3 yr bumper to bumper warranty. I still have the 5 year drive train, I assume. I have been going to my normal shop for oil changes and tire rotation, cause I'm done with doing it all myself, so I will take advantage of the dealers offer to do the next one 'on the house'. I'll see how the tranny responds on my next drive back up to the mountain, and then present my results, with the TSA # for the tranny, to the dealer for opinion when I take it in for the free service.

Good on Toyota for owning the issue and recognizing it’s important to have happy customers so they buy from you again in the future. I wish more companies would proactively do stuff like this.

Separately, yes - $32k for a motor replacement in a non-commercial vehicle does seem high. I had our local dealer replace the motor in my wife’s ā€˜17 Escape (long block and turbo) for $9k. Did it cost more than the car was worth at the time? Yes. But she loves that thing - so happy wife happy life.

Maybe it’ll get you a free trans service if it goes really good for you… rooting for a good outcome for you.
