In the 80s they were 100% Mitz powered. You could literally lift the valve cover off an eclipse and bolt it to an Elantra.

Makes for some funny swaps when you throw a 4G63 in an old Sonata.
You may recall the the Hyundai Theta engine development was a result of an alliance - IIRC going back to the 80s with Hyundai, Mitsu and maybe Chrysler. Hyundai eventually bought the others out and used that design to eventually produce the Theta II - which had a major problem in that many prematurely used up their crank bearings and would seize. Hyundai has never revealed the source of the problem but as a result of settlement with the DOJ is obligated to replace the engines when they fail. And Hyundai/KIA have the shortest OCI intervals in the industry - on my 2013 it's 3.5 for severe use and 5k for normal use.

This was one of the most blatant ones. Looks like they shrunk a Deville DTS and put a C Class front fascia on
it.

Yep. After they took a shot at their own designs they did that. The Alpha and Beta motors were pretty close to bigger 4G15s in design with weird semi pentroof heads and timing belts that only went around one of the two cams.

This could be fun game for this thread. I believe Sid, @Msfitoy , has a background in auto design. Perhaps he'd like to tell us what he sees on this one.

I was on Block Island for a few days and saw the Maverick up close and driving by. Looks like a rolling brick. Very squared off and black trim on white truck made it look worse. Saw a Hyundai Santa Cruz pick up, which I think is direct competition, and the looks blew it away. I have a 2014 Hyundai and lov e its performance and reliability, as well as dealer/manufacturer support. Even with the engine issue at 109000 miles, they gave us a COMPLETE motor under warantee.

Still not a fan of the Bronco, think Ford missed the boat. The ones I saw, not impressed. The only one I liked was a white, plain jane, 4 door normal thinner tires that Dirt Church Brewing in VT uses. And I only like that because it is set up and looks like what it should for what they are using it for, an SUV. Doesn't look like they will use for anything more than traveling dirt roads with their bikes and commuting to places. I've only seen pictures of more off road capable Broncos, but vehichles always look different in person.
I think the Maverick is beautiful and well engineered, but to paraphrase the thread title into proper English...
"To each his own."

I really like the way those look - MUCH better than its Hyundai twin. That said.. it has stolen design cues. That has been Hyundai/Kias thing forever now.

If I can ever find one at a dealer to test drive I'll seriously look at getting one. Love my Ranger but it's a bit more truck than I really need. But also I noticed that they are not available in Saber. :( Cyber Orange or Oxford White might be interesting to me though. Notably white because it wouldn't show every little chip in the paint as much.

That's one thing I do not like about my Ranger. The paint is so damn thin. The last time I washed it I accidentally lightly tapped the hose nozzle on the side and it put a small chip in it down to the white paint. I have a few other dings like that from seemingly minor impacts. So at least if it was white those blemishes would not be as prominent.
Augie I just saw this Cyber Orange Maverick yesterday. I didn't get to talk to the owner but it does look really nice in person. It's not for me but I can see where they'll fill a niche for many people and small delivery companies.

a version of having a Halo car for branding and not getting other smaller version too close to the "halo" so that thing still has a reason to be the King, while others get to identify with said King of hauling ass, off-road, etc.

Raptor and to a smaller extent the FX4 label.

Ask nissan how things went when they had no sports car for a bit.
Sure but ford didn't sully the Mach 1 name by dropping it on performance models of their other cars. Focus ST/RS & Taurus SHO for example. They didn't offer those plus a Mach 1 model for the HALO effect. They didn't stick Mach-1 on the Mustang Two 4 cyl beater either.

I'm not suggesting ford drop off-road packages from their trucks (Ranger or F150), so I'm not sure how Nissan not making sports cars plays into it. I'd like better off-road packages available, just with unique names, like they do with every other vehicle in their line-up. Ranger they easily could have used WildTrack, Wildtrack X, or other ROW model names. The Escape and Maverick SUV should have gotten their own package names. Maverick Top Gun, Ice Man, Jester, etc all have more appeal to me than Maverick Raptor.

Bronco they gave a variety of unique names as well, Sasquatch, Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks & Badlands. All great names, suit the vehicle and unique to the line.

They stopped making them, then became French.

That color in AWD is what I originally ordered when I came over to Ford. It is still sitting for 40k on the lot after I didn't get it.

Thanks for the pictures. Looks cool but I think I'd pass on that color. I thought it might look closer to Saber when I looked at the pictures online.

Yeah it's pretty bright and you really have to like yellow. There was a cart return between us but there's no comparison to our Saber color.
