FX4 owners, what’s your opinion and experience with the tires that come from the factory? When I got it it was the end of winter and last winter wasn’t anything special at all so I haven’t had the pleasure of driving in deep (or even more than a few inches) of snow. In the spring I tried to drive into my backyard after some serious rain abd the weight/mud combo shut me down. I feel like a more aggressive tire was necessary. I could feel the terrain management/ diff lock and 4LOW trying it’s best but the treads were quickly caked in thick claylike mud. Thoughts? Tire suggestions?

I had the Hankooks on my 2016 Frontier and I can say they were a good tire for the street. For OffRoad it is questionable. I feel the tire is a "Squishy" type tire and wont hold up to much. Others on here have blown a few out on the trail.

As for a replacement it really depends on what you want to do and what size you are considering. For me I personally love the Firestone Destination XT. It is lighter than the KO2 and other tires when the same size and load range is compared. It also does well with wet and snowy conditions. I do have a thread somewhere on here mentioning it with a full review. I recommend taking a peak at it.

I will. Do you have the link? Every time I try to search something it seems to look within the thread and not the title

Don't have the link but I do know it's in the tires brakes section. Might be a few pages back

All terrains that are affordable, long lasting, comfortable, and quiet on the road are generally the wrong tire for thick, slick mud. Only so far you can go before you need a dedicated mud terrain.

I cannot speak to offroad or dangerous snow and mud, but for street driving, the Hankooks are not a bad tire and Ford's choice of them as one of the stock tires was reasonable; still, for looks, feel, grip, and durability, I traded mine out for Falken Wildpeaks AT after about 10,000 miles. Again, nothing against the Hankooks, which did not give me any trouble, but I love the Falkens and will stick with the brand in the future for this truck and beyond.

Which is basically what I would have needed for that one specific situation. I was curious to peoples opinions and preferences because I’ve seen the stock hankooks get some hate.

Today’s devotional
When your in the mud don’t stop
Stopping wasn’t part of the plan but I have a gate that leaves me with only a couple inches of clearance on both sides and an the whole yard is inclined and of course you have to go up it to get into the yard. Never INTENDED to stop but had to slow to almost stopped…..till I was stuck.

No..... really......

4lo is NOT what you want in mud.
Thank you….there’s a lot of conflicting information out there…..i didn’t hear it here but from what I found 4lo would have worked in a thick mud situation which is what I was in.

Ah ok
Personally, I don't understand all the hate. I've been running the ATM off road across the country for about 2 years now. The tread seems to do a good job as an AT and this same tire in a 33" would be excellent. At 53k miles, the tread wear has become a bit uneven and I'm starting to get some road noise and vibrations. I'd chalk that up to my lax approach to tire rotations and alignment checks. It's a good tire. USAA is offering 25% of Goodyear tires so I'll probably go with them when its time for a new set, but the Dynapro AT2 Xtreme is a strong candidate after my experience with the factory ATMs.

There's the issue of side wall strength and cut/chip resistance, but that's a similar problem to mud traction. Gotta get a rock crawling tire if you want to go rock crawling!

Wheelspeed is important, if for nothing else than to clean the tread out. Thick mud will fill in tread voids and essentially turn them into slicks without enough spin on things to fling the mud off the tire.
