Exactly the reaction Firestone/Bridgestone was hoping you'd have 23 years later.
You talking about the Explorer?
I took advantage of the recall but I really felt guilty watching them slash the sidewalls of perfectly good tires.

I had a screw in almost the same location on my passenger front stock Hankook. Figured I'd just try patching it myself with a decent quality plug kit; I've been running on the plug for ~5k miles now with no pressure loss.
I was told it was "too close" to the edge to repair.
thing is i haven't plugged a tire myself since i was 16 years old in my ATV...i would probably not do as good of a job as you did :)

i am also kind of a coward and want to know that my tires are as perfect and safe as possible. i am kind of tempted to plug it and see if i can wait until spring until i have more budget and know what tires i want to get, the hole is not that bad. you guys have all been very helpful with your suggestions and thank you for that! i will most likey just get new tires and hope it doesn't happen again, but i live in a an area with a lot of new construction so there are a lot of screws and nails around.

a lot of good suggestions here and thank you all. i see Falken WildPeak AT3W and Cooper AT3 mentioned a a lot. I need to look around to see who has these in stock locally.

these have not been recommended in the posts but what do you guys think of
BFGoodrich - Trail-Terrain T/A tires?

they are at costco for $330 CAD each. i bought costco tires in the past cause i liked their warranty but now i realize that these road hazard warranties aren't that useful....they are prorated and only cover the tire that has an issue (fair enough!), but if one tire failing means i need to buy 4 that that warranty is only helping me for apx $250 depending on how worn the tire is :( and getting the appointment for installation with them is a major pain.

you could ask a shop to put the spare tire on that wheel if that tire is un-patchable.

Also, my plan is to go to the Falken Wildepeak AT3s; I want the 3 peak rating for winter driving and my off-road driving is on the rocks. Probably pull that trigger next spring and ride out the stock tires for 1 more winter (currently @ 30k miles).
when i first had this leak that is what i thought of doing...just swap the spare and keep the plugged one as my new spare. this was good idea until i realized that the tires on my truck are R18 and that the spare is R17...so it wouldn't work out :(

you have another recommendation for Falken Wildepeak AT3s. a lot of folks have recommended these. they are at the top of my list to shop for but i haven't check local availability. thank you!

Yet you drive a Ford? They were just as guilty for not changing the brand of tire sooner if they knew they had an issue. Plus Ford still uses them. Best sell your ranger and get something else.

And don't forget the ford pinto... but I guess people potentially burning alive doesn't ding on your ethics meter.
Hell ihope you don't own guns, those can kill people and the manufactures know...

Hopefully you never own anything with a Takata airbag.

I appreciate you sharing your unsolicited opinion to my response to the o.p. Oh and I nicely tried to deflect but since you continue I'll just let you know I didn't recommend a firestone tire. I made a recommendaton of a suredrive which is a rebranded kumho.
Somebody has issues.

But most of us have the ability to decipher where real fault lays.

Good luck with your Firestones, I guess.

All this flat tire talk has me thinking a few things. Way back in my young glory days, I plugged and even patched sidewalls (break bead, pull off half the tire, glue in rubber patch, re-attach, blow and go).

But I haven't patched a tire in 30 years now, but I'm ready! Thanks to the never-eneding pressure awesome advice of this forum, I have this and sleep better. =D

ready to plug up to 512 holes!

Western Weld recommendation from The Farm Project - seems like the Western Weld site is down but these look available on Amazon and eBay ...

look at all the stuff I'll never, ever need to use and the diminished payload! =p
well, not true, I may need one of the multiple 10mm wrenches I have scattered all over ...

Never had good luck with bfg. Used to run cooper's until roughly 2015 then couldn't seem to get a set that would balance. I've heard this has been corrected. Toyo was my favorite from 15-23 but price got brutal, still a great tire. I hear great things about the wildpeaks.

You mean like the square body Chevys with the tank outside the fame rail. The one Sixty Minutes showed us would rupture and ignite in a T bone. But... only if you they used pyrotechnic devices to get ignition.
I was just making a point to a bs unsolicited comment. :) and apparently he got butthurt and blocked me so he could go to the crying closet. ?

I’m on a very similar search as the OP, with the one additional constraint that I tow a 4,300 lb trailer a couple times a month. I’m looking for something with good noise and manners while towing, that handles snow in Illinois when I’m not towing, and is better than average at light off-roading to get to trailheads (I.e. not Jeep trails). Would anyone disqualify the Falken, Cooper, or Toyo recommendations for that use case?

I just put the BFG Trail Terrains on a few weeks ago, stock size. I’m totally biased though I’m just big BFG fan that’s all I’ve ever ran on my F150.

The tires were $245 off Amazon.

What I like about the trail terrains is they look a bit more aggressive but they’re a 110T highway light truck tire direct replacement for the hankooks.

I air down and take the truck into soft sand on the beach quiet often, and use it for a daily commuter, is why I didn’t get the KO2.

By the way I also had new sensors installed while I was at it all. I had a problem with one of the originals before, a tire shop snapped in new valve stem and while it’s been working fine I just didn’t trust it ultimately. The new TPMS are made by Shrader, they’re an OEM equivalent and I got them on rock auto for $25 each.

I’ve had the BFG Trail Terrains on for about 6,000-miles now. To be completely transparent, I’m not a BFG fanboy. FWIW, I wanted a lighter all-terrain tire that was somewhat quiet on the highway, could handle gravel/level B roads, and didn’t look like an all season tire. In the past, I’ve ran the Nitto Ridge Grappler (not a fan), Mikey Thompson Baja Boss AT (had quality issues on the tires on both my truck and my son’s truck), Cooper Rugged Trek (good tire, just a bit too heavy for what I was looking to put on my Tremor), Maxxis Razr AT (good tire but loud), and the Falken Wildpeak AT3’s (Awesome tire!).
I went with the BFG Trail Terrains as they checked all the boxes that I was looking for. As I’ve gotten older, I find myself liking a more comfortable ride though I do appreciate those trucks that are modded with larger tires and higher offset aftermarket wheels.
I’ve been pleased with the ride quality, dry road performance, how it handles wet pavement, and how quiet they are. As far as gas mileage, with them being a Standard Load tire at 46-lbs. (according to Discount Tire’s website), I’m averaging 21-mph highway (hand calculated) on a 1” FRL leveled Tremor. The tires are 285/70R17’s. I am curious as to how they’ll do in an Iowa winter. Guess I’ll find out in a few months….

Just my $.02….
YMMV

These really look nice to me. I know for the driving I do, i would be better off with a good set of all seasons, but i still want my ranger's tires to at least look tough. I am pretty close to ordering a set of these.

I can get Falken's from a place like tire rack, but Canadian Tire keeps saying they are out of stock. I am a little lazy and just want to order the tires and have them shipped to a shop where i just go and they install the tires.

I can get the BFG from costco for $1338 CAD installed. I bought tires from them in the past. They install and fill them with nitrogen. In the past it was hard to get through to them and make an appointment but once i did that everything went smooth.

I normally only take my truck to ford for anything but i figure installing a set of tires can't be that hard for costco or canadian tire ;)

Thank you for the post and for the pictures and to everyone else for the suggestions. I will post an update and let you know what i end up getting.

This forum is so hard on my retirement funds (LOL, what funds?).

Soupie came with the Bridgestone Duelers and they've been perfectly fine for my dump runs and couple of longer trips we've taken. They even did okay last winter for those glorious snow-filled dump runs! =D

Nothing's more beautiful then a fresh blanket of snow on the dump ... *daydreams*

But now I''m obsessed with getting nicely rated all-season or all-terrain tires that handle snow and ice with ease.

I've narrowed down my search to Nokian Tyres One HT or Nokian Outpost nATs in the 16" Rangers stock size. I've been back and forth about possibly going a tiny bit bigger (265/70 R 16 vs. 255/70 R 16) but stock is probably best for me. And I like that this specific one is made in Tennessee. I only have experience with Nokian from a past Corolla we had (that had 360,000 New England miles on it).

Right now the Outposts are winning in my OCD head. =p

There are so many review sites that'll tell you pretty much whatever you want (A is better than B on one site but another shows that B is better). =\

Not the nAT, the AT:
https://www.tire-reviews.com/Tire/Nokian/Outpost-AT.htm

How Souipe feels going on a winter dump run! Go, Soupie, Go!!! =D

I had to go back and reread half of this thread to figure out you weren't calling me butt hurt.

KO2 is great offroad but overkill if you're not doing that and wet grip/snow is middling. Falken wildpeak: https://www.falkentire.com/wildpeak/at3w is great all around and especially in snow.
I installed the Wildpeaks earlier this year and they are as good as advertised. Here’s my Ranger on the stock wheels with a Rough Country leveling kit and 1” spacers.
