Pretty wild looking thing - but what do you think of just the front half? To me it almost looks like the same proportions as my Focus...

At first, I thought that this might have been a custom-mod, but I see that it was an actual production vehicle in Australia; did it exist elsewhere?
They were made here for many years (early 1960's to 2016) and exported to RHD countries throughout the Southern Hemisphere, so New Zealand, South Africa, Pacific Islands, Se Asia etc and I believe a few even made it as far as Japan. For a short time in the early 1970's there was even a 4x4 version built which used Jeep Cherokee running gear (Ford Australia used to supply engines to Jeep Australia at the time) . 4x4 versions are rare collectors items these days, rust and hard use having claimed most of them, although I did see one recently when out west still in the original farmer's hands and still in relatively good original condition.

Disappointment would be my guess...
You sir would be completely wrong. Early versions of these things used either a 250 CI straight six or 302 or 351 Ford V8's and went very well. Particularly the 351's which could be bought with a (barely) de-tuned version of the Falcon GTHO Bathurst engine which turned out over 300 Hp back in 1970.

Later versions (like the one in the picture) use a 4.0 liter twin cam variable timing six which turned out in various forms from 266 Hp - standard version to 436 Hp for the turbo option version. These locally developed sixes were so good that Ford Australia (so it was said) had to de-tune them, because they were faster and more economical than the V8, and were killing V8 sales. Later because it was so easy to get them re-tuned aftermarket, Ford Australia gave up and let them run at their full potential.

Ford had to import ZF 6HP-26 autos from Germany because they used to tear up the locally made BTRE 4 and 6 speed autos. (This might be the real story, of how the de-tuning story started)
Later Ford switched to the Ford 6R80 boxes which were just basically the same box made under license in Detroit.

These engines were regarded as some of the strongest and best engines ever made by Ford, despite their high output they were extremely reliable and rarely broke down. Many are still in daily use.

Grown men cried when production ceased in 2016.

Look up Ford "Barra" engine

You'd be close there, at the time Ford Australia was importing all it's small cars from UK / Europe and the locally built cars were styled to look like part of the Ford (Euro) family. So yeah it's a scaled up Focus style although a much bigger vehicle.
