After debating getting back into a wrangler or getting a midsize truck i decided to give the ranger and carvana a shot for the first time. Found a 2021 that had a single owner only 24k miles, clean history but no maintenance ever listed just emission inspections.
This was an unexpected purchase I had to make so I was hoping for some last minute advice on what to look out for/red flags?
I will be taking it to a mechanic for inspection and I’ll have 7 days to return it to Carvana if anything seems off.

Find out if the transmission TSB test has been performed.

All the 10R80 transmissions built before August 15, 2022 have a potentially faulty CDF.

Have them perform the test listed in TSB 25-2024 to see if there's a problem.

HERE is a link to a thread that details the TSB.

Good looking truck!

Welcome and congrats on your new Ranger! Besides the transmission make sure to check to see if it has a tailgate damper. This is the second (besides the transmission) most crucial item on your truck. It's a safety hazard for little children who are standing under it. Laugh as you will but just look at Duke @DukeCanBuildit and you can see the results of not having one.

Now ask yourself, "do I really wanna look like Duke"? o_O :surprised: If it doesn't have one then you know the previous owner didn't take good care of it and had no class. If it does, then you have yourself a winner and you're instantly welcome into the Kool Damper Klub.:captain::ninja:

Fully inspect the exterior. Best way to do that IMO is to wash it, even if it's clean. My manager just went through an ordeal with them. Bought a Golf R and didn't look it over real good (his fault yes) because "the pictures didn't show anything". Well after the 7 days were up, we got a bunch of rain and low and behold, the rear hatch had a leak. Why, because a huge dent right in front of the antenna on the roof. Upon further inspection, the whole antenna was ripped off at one point, and jerry rigged back together. Explains why he didn't have radio reception. The "insurance" that came with the car paid for a new headliner, antenna and wiring, plus installation. But didn't cover the roof damage because it was past the 7 days.

TLDR: Do yourself a favor and do a thorough inspection lol..

Welcome, you are going to love it!
if you got it at a good price you can afford a new transmission in 26k miles
its a cross between a breakfast club, but leans more towards Cult
#1 no dampener
#2 Pictures or it didnt happen

Welcome to the forum and say goodbye to your life savings!

Just click on my signature and order all that stuff. =D

It includes the damper and 303 Graphene!

Seriously though, this is an awesome group of folks. I have never seen an unanswered technical question.

And I have the same transmission as you and I don't worry too much about it. Remember, the failed ones are very big deals to their owners but don't represent all Rangers. But it is an issue.

What a great deal and low miles, I bet it'll be good for you. Especially for the documented and mandated dump runs to meet your monthly quota! =p

Well I took delivery today and drove it for a few hours. Some things I noticed upon accelerating from a dead stop it feels like almost like a fwd car having wheel hop but on a smaller scale. Transmission does have an almost sticky feeling to it while shifting at lower speeds, which I read on here is a ranger thing ?

two things could be throwing you off
#1 Turbo Lag, the truck has more than enough power, you just have to count to two (not when the road is wet)
#2 Drive in Sport mode (S) (all the time) the transmission tends to keep the RPMs down in (D)
or use tow mode, the truck dont care if you are towing but it will keep the RPMs a little higher
Trust us you will have more fun in (S)

Ended up exchanging it back to Carvana and getting a wrangler. My ranger experience was short lived but I couldn’t be happier with the wrangler for now.
