I wish mine was like that,our HOA is a joke. Here you can park in the driveway and in the street only if there's no room in the driveway but that never stops people from parking in the street when their driveway is free. Then add most around here drive like maniacs so it's an adventure getting through some of these tight streets with cars parked are on both sides and not get hit head on!

Hi Dave,

Rules without enforcement result in what you describe... I have a love hate relationship with my HOA. I was the HOA webmaster for 8 years and saw the behind the scenes of this "governing" body. Not Mensa candidates for sure.

Motion activated floodlight and ring camera solved all my driveway issues when I lived on the border of Detroit.

Ive since moved to the sticks to avoid this type of stuff.

as far as home security cameras helping driveway theft...most are just crap quality and the thieves know it.
very few are clear enough to make any specific ID on a suspect.

for instance...the perp might be wearing a blue jacket...but the video isn't very clear on what shade. it gets washed out in the light.
wearing a ball cap, covers the face almost 100% because most people put the cameras up high thinking they're safer there....but the tradeoff is the angles on facial features get skewed and unreadable, and if anyone gets caught, they know the routine...i was looking for melanie? isn't this melanies car?

I wish in canada we could get away with personal land mines and rigged hand grenades.
the small group of thieves that run the round robin of the court systems would be neutralized quick enough and save us all grief.

For me, its not so much about the video being useful as it is my phone waking me allowing me to trigger the siren then take matters from there. Now that Ring has “people” detection instead of just motion, false alarms are few and far between.

People coming into my yard where I used to live was a common occurrence. People leaving with anything happened once, before I had any floods and cameras.

I do like the land mines idea much better though.

But not my sister...she claims the life insurance money has finally improved her life.
Looks like she and the thief are are getting married in June.

Another high-end F150 tailgate was stolen in my zip code just last night. Owner admits it was unlocked.

After I purchased my home I made sure to put security lighting on the garage as well as upgrade the lighting around the house. It didn't stop the broad daylight theft of my bike but I have had quite a few neighbors and some of the kids from the nearby school thank me for making the area a little safer at night. Looking forward to the next few years when the city's lights are going to be upgraded by the utility company to LED. The couple examples they put up in town illuminate very well.

I myself have never heard of this but I did do some quick Google Fu and there are news articles going back years on rashes of tailgate theft in various places around the country.

I guess because its an easy couple minute theft that they can make hundreds on in a quick turn around fashion by selling them on ebay ect. Seems to be a very common thing that's been going on for quite some time. Who woulda' thunk?

I know of a Ford manager that had a current year tailgate hanging on his office wall. He bought it on ebay thinking it had been stolen from the assembly plant, and he was going to catch the perpetrator. Turns out the part was from a persons truck that had been wrecked and its sale was perfectly legitimate. He hung it on the wall to remind himself that things are not always what they appear to be. (It also reminded some of us that he shouldn't be so distrusting of people)

Here is my solution bought for a different reason though.

I ice fish quite a bit. Being as how the flip over ice shack is longer than the truck, I have to have the tailgate down. I was worried that while parked somewhere after fishing that someone might have an interest in my fishing shack. I looked into ways to secure it but nothing was really easy to use in sub zero weather so I bought one of these. I stick it to the inside of the shack and arm it after I part the truck. If anyone even moves the shack a little teeny bit, this sucker goes off and it is loud. I can see attaching this to the tailgate and when someone moves the tailgate, this sucker would go off. Attach it with cheap harbor freight magnets to the tailgate and you are set.

Tailgate is aluminum....need tape...magnets won't work...

Stick it to the inside of the bed. The slightest movement sets it off. It is actually best to have it somewhere where it can't be easily seen. This way the alarm keeps going until it is either shut off by the owner or until the crook finds it and smashes it with his feet.
