Stuck Accelerator

A coworker had his accelerator stick on him yesterday in his Chevy Tahoe, and nearly burned up his brakes and tires getting it back home. He promptly had it towed to his favorite shop. They found the floormat to be the culprit! I about busted a gut laughing, you have to know this guy!

And yes, there seems to be a strange number of Tahoes "that won't start." This was an unlucky way to find the floor mat is slippery.

Yeah I'm not even close to being at the point where I'd pretend to call myself a mechanic on the weekend...so feel free to explain how this works for me

But what would a vacuum leak have to do with a stuck accelerator? Isn't acceleration usually under positive pressure? ? I thought a vacuum leak would hinder acceleration not promote it ??‍

I am not exactly sure myself, but I think he thinks with uncontrolled amount of air getting into the carburetor can cause uncontrolled RPM. He said something like that.

Yes a major vacuum leak , can cause a high rpm idle.
But a related story, I too have had a floor mat catch under the accelerator pedal, years ago.
Put gear to neutral- pulled over on highway, noted the gas pedal felt weird, got out in investigated - pulled my NEW carpeted floor mat out from under the pedal , the NEW floor mat was promptly returned to the store and old went back in- my gas pedal was stuck at 65 MPH and a lesson learned, do not cheap out on floor mats and ensure proper fit

I am sure high idle is much different from full throttle.
He said he has WeatherTech mats but that the attachment points are worn out.

I had a scary moment many years ago when I tapped the brakes to disengage cruise and slow for a toll booth, and the car responded by flooring the accelerator! Thankfully the car's engine (325e) was no match for its brakes, and I was able to cancel cruise manually, but definitely a sphincter tightening moment.

Toyota found that many of the people that experienced the unpredictable acceleration problem had put aftermarket floor mats on top of the OEM floor mats.
