My new to me ranger came with an annoying feature where it (bumps) at the very end of a stop or right as you let off the brake to start accelerating. I was 99.9% sure it was the slip joint in the axle and thought I would call the dealership to get it looked at under warranty before I crawled under the truck and did it myself. The first words out of the techs mouth was "It sounds like the transmission, I'll need a week to diagnose it". Given the Ford Rangers history I don't blame him for thinking about the transmission, but the last thing I need is him resetting all the learning tables and messing up my shifting that has just started to smooth out. As you can see from the photo it barely has any grease. Packed it full of some CV axle/ bearing grease and it got rid of about 90% of the bump I was feeling. The last 10% is when you come to an abropt stop, which could be a number of other things including the transmission. The question is how long this will "fix" it. Time will tell.

You could try to stiffen up the carrier bearing bushing. If there are slots you can put some fuel line in the holes and zip tie it in. Bushing is designed with NVH in mind, not always stiff enough to eliminate everything. I did it before on older fords and it tightened up the sloppy thud feeling you are describing.
