If you only knew how many fraud reports I took or signed off on using this scam. I've had these idiots send me stuff too.

I briefly considered replying and tell them the sale price was now $100,000. But, not even going there. They keep doing it because some people bite. I still can't believe it.

Let me guess... You posted your ad on Craigs List? A while back I was trying to help my father, who is not very Internet savvy, sell a motorcycle and some furniture on Craigs List. Almost every reply was the same type of scam even though I specifically stated in the ads will not ship, will not take payment by mail, must meet in person to make an offer. I didn't even reply to them, just deleted their messages. Eventually we found some real buyers.

But I guess enough people fall for that crap to keep those scammers trying.

Yes. I've sold a lot of stuff on CL, but in the last few years it's gotten stupid. I sort of fell for it at first because they say they wanted to buy but gave me an email address, so I replied to that address. Then they sent the Nigerian Prince email. My bad, and learned my lesson, which I should have already known. But, I will never just blindly click on links or give out info.

I had one like that. Watch out for sure. Check looked legit. Deposited and it was taking 7 days to clear. Last day bank rejected it as a fraud check. They were pushing for anonymous party to pickup before check clears. Wasn’t having any of it. Bank tried to charge me for the deposit reject. Told them would close 6 accounts if that stuck. They dropped the “charge”

Well now you are probably going to get an increase in spam as well. At least you didn't give them your phone number. And yeah Craigs List has become a dumpster fire over the last several years. It is still useful to some degree as long as you can wade through the BS.

Anyway this is from Craigs List own site on avoiding scams:

https://www.craigslist.org/about/scams

Deal locally, face-to-face follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.
  • Do not provide payment to anyone you have not met in person.
  • Beware offers involving shipping - deal with locals you can meet in person.
  • Never wire funds (e.g. Western Union) - anyone who asks you to is a scammer.
  • Don't accept cashier/certified checks or money orders - banks cash fakes, then hold you responsible.
  • Transactions are between users only, no third party provides a "guarantee".
  • Never give out financial info (bank account, social security, paypal account, etc).
  • Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen—that amazing "deal" may not exist.
  • Refuse background/credit checks until you have met landlord/employer in person.
  • "craigslist voicemails" - Any message asking you to access or check "craigslist voicemails" or "craigslist voice messages" is fraudulent - no such service exists.

So you're saying I shouldn't give my bank account number?

It's so crazy that people fall for this stuff, but I actually know someone who did. Crazy.

Sadly a lot of people do. The list above reminded me of another popular scam I read about involving Craigs List. Scammers would go to websites listing apartments, copy the pictures of the apartment, then make their own listing on Craigs List. They would ask people to wire or mail them the deposit for the apartment. They mostly took advantage of people out of town that needed a place to rent but could not necessarily travel to the actual location. Then the person scammed would show up looking to get the keys to their new apartment and of course they were screwed.

The scam they almost got me with was requesting a vehicle history report when I was selling a motorcycle on CL. Seemed reasonable enough I thought at the time. They even provided a link to a site that had them for a very reasonable price.

I did end up buying one since the bike had a salvage title and I figured it would help sell it.

After a little research I learned that the link was not legit and just set up to harvest your credit card info.

I ended up buying one from a legit site that I'd used before.

Unsurprisingly the turd was no longer interested in the bike when I sent him the legit history report.

Sadly they prey on the elderly and gullible as well. We had one senior gentleman mortgage his home for 50k and wired this "love interest" the cash. Family didn't know about until the local bank contacted his son, he was at that time trying to get a 2nd mortgage to send another 20k. ??? we where able to stop the 2nd attempt but I don't think he ever retrieved the 1st 50k. Wired it to a bank that the US didn't have extradition in.
