Retired, work is a four letter word.
In Calif 2 degrees is Arctic weather, in Iowa not so much, depends on what you are used to, when I was stationed in Alaska we played ball in that. Sounds like running rich combined with the cold, and a long idle.

Just before I was due for an oil change this happened. Are you due for an oil change soon?

These trucks run very rich, many have reported fuel in the oil, I believe this has something to do with the excess exhaust smoke your referring too.

I am at 1,400 miles and did my first oil change at 1000 miles. Now the oil at 1,000 miles looked good but did have a fuel smell.

We've had some sub zero temps the last week or two. I always warm the Ranger up just a few minutes and the other morning I definitely smelled that rotten egg smell... wasn't bad and it drove fine when I head out. It was that same sulfur smell that we had from the well water at the family farm growing up. (There didn't appear to be anything unusual about the amount or color of the exhaust.)
Anyway, I haven't caught a wiff of it since from the Ranger. I always fill up with Exxon 93 octane at the same station every time.

I usually warm up the truck for 10-15 minutes in the morning to defrost the windows.
So used to my 2003 Mountaineer having to warm up 15 minutes to defrost windshield that I was surprised how good and fast the defroster works in my Ranger. On HI setting, I bet I haven't had to warm it up more than 3 or 4 minutes to defrost a heavily frosted windshield :)

Is there a setting so the defrost with remote start is on high?

I think when I start with the Remote Start, it uses whatever setting I used last on the Climate control. I'll double check though next time... but now that you asked about that, I'm curious.

Update: I did not get a chance to remote start before I left work so I just hopped in and left. Noticed a normal amount of exhaust smoke at idle on the trip but temps had warmed up to 19F.

Got on the freeway and tested out the manual shifting in S mode. Held it at 4500rpm going 70mph and when i got off the freeway went to 3rd gear and stayed at 4500k and bounded it a few hundred feet to redline a couple of times. It drove like a bat out of hell and was a blast. When i got home i let it idle and hopped out and there was minimal smoke and no smell.

smoke and condensation are two very different things that come out of your exhaust.
Good call. Maybe I am using the wrong terminology. It was not like hot fire smoke or anything. If it does it again in the morning I’ll take a video

Sometimes you just gotta "drive it like you stole it" to clean it all out. Now try telling that to the cop when he stops you and see how far you get. :stop: ?

Hi Andrew,

I have seen something similar in cold weather testing where there is no wind and the exhaust vapors swirl around the vehicle. Condensate is white, Smoke is blueish...I thought early on it was condensate but thought I would be flamed for such a suggestion as you were not in the ambient temp range where we were for testing...We need -40°F or C and the temp is the same on both temp scales. BTW...changing a distributor at these temps outside sucks... Ditto for Carb swaps... Cold weather vehicle development was certainly a challenge...

Likely you do not have a problem.

best,
Phil

Long ago and far away, I was pulled over in my 300hp CRX...I jumped out with a stop watch in my hand and explained that I was "testing mods"...he told me to stop doing that and let me go...
