Thank you !

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.

23 years served.

I hate the Army. It broke me physically and mentally.

Would I do it over again, yes. All 23 years.

Even being shot at, rocketed, sort of exploded....

Do I want my kids to follow me, no. Hell no and they better prepare for an hours long talk if they go that way.

I pray for the end of war. Just glad more than a few are still willing to swear an oath and beat the piss out of those who want to control the world based on religion or screwed up ideas of who should rule who alone.

I served with a variety of religions. None of whom wanted to kill others for not following them.

If you still wear the uniform. God speed. If you wore it, thank you. For those that, like me, lost friends.. I am sorry. Only they have seen the end of war. May they rest in peace.

yeah thanks to you and all the others who have served and the many who put their lives on the line for their country .
However just today read this very grim statistic from the ny times article:

Has the world ever been at peace? Of the past 3,400 years, humans have been entirely at peace for 268 of them, or just 8 percent of recorded history. How many people have died in war?

Long, long, long before humans were even a distant thought, there were war's being fought among the lowest forms of life on Earth, among insects.
Then man came along, and lo and behold, we took after the insects!!!
Sad fact that as long as there is one faction that wants what another faction has, or hates just for the sake of hating, there will be wars....
And, that's where all us veterans come from.
Lest we never forget !!!

Thanks for the sentiment. I served '86-'90. And I hope that NYT article is factual, because fact is not NYT's strong point. It is a terrible source for unbiased news.

Don't disagree but can't think of any reason the NY times would benefit by distorting this area of historical info, some of the the conflicts surely were strictly regional and not global like the 2 world wars which destroyed an estimated 108 million lives, in the us we have been fortunate as the world wars were mostly not fought on our home turf, I do read a lot of history and much of history is about warfare, I think a lot of knowledge and appreciation about the conflicts and the bravery of those who served can be gained by reading , in the USA this tradition can be traced to the revolutionary War where the continental army endured extreme hardships yet defeated a far more powerful adversary, am writing this as I am again watching a band of brothers, reminds of my father who the day after graduating from hs enlisted with his buddies to fight in ww 2 and said fighting facism in Europe was the proudest accomplishment in his life. Band of brothers much more realistic than that ridiculous movie with Clint Eastwood as a marine and Mario van peebles that usually airs on veterans day. But thank you for having served.

They are only counting conflicts that are recorded. Europeans centric.
I doubt tribal warfare has taken even a single year off. Africa, the Americas.

In 4 years of war the US lost over 2% of its population - at least 750,000, and possibly 850,000 military combatants KIA, not counting civilian losses.

Few Northern civilians died from the war, but massive numbers of Southern civilians died as war ravaged the southern states. The "Total War Concept" was used extensively against the South. General William Tecumseh Sherman wrote the Union was "not only fighting hostile armies, but a hostile people, and must make old and young, rich and poor, feel the hard hand of war, as well as their organized armies."

Fought on our own soil. Still the bloodiest war by far that the US has ever been involved in.

And the US has been in a constant state of war since it independence, 93% of the time, or 222 years out of 245 ( as of 2022 ). Some reports state 228 years - only 17 years of peace since 1776.

We've been in a constant state of war since 9/11/2001.

I am a vet and I honor every death and drop of blood spilled.

It is a sad thing - war.

And humanity is damned good at it.

I watched this film last night - Joyeux Noel 2005

WW I, 1914. In the trenches both side call a truce to celebrate Christmas together (Scotts, French and Germans). For several days after they protect each other, then the upper echelons get wind of what's happening. The rest is history. Must watch on this Veterans Day!

Reminds me yrs back a George Carlin comedy routine naming all the various terms for wars - insurgencies, border confrontations, skirmishes, uprisings, revolutions, tribal warfare, terrorist attacks , territorial disputes , police actions , genocides and so on.

Sources like the New York Times are notorious for minimalizing aggression of tyrants and Nazis. If you look back to their coverage of the horrors of the holocaust, you would have to look several pages back into the insignificant little stories of their back pages to see even little blurbs of what was going on.
Not much differrence today as they and many other disgusting media, blame Israel for the aggression that seeks no less than the demise of the Jewish state.
