Teachers could administer corporal punishment.

Yes they could. I have not forgotten when Sister Ann Rita smacked me with her crutch for talking while in line.

Ruler? I wish!

I met with the "Board of Education" on more than one occasion. And when the skinny old frail school teachers realized that all 4'10" 85lbs of them wasn't a threat to 6'1" 185lb me, I started getting paddled by one of the coaches. They did it in front of the class too. If you cried you got a bonus lick. Straightened my @$$ out pretty quick. I wasn't going back to that well again.
It's to bad they still can't do that. I mean sure some might have gone a "little to far" but it works as you can attest to.

My 3rd grade teacher had a yardstick that was like a quarter inch thick. Boy that hurt like a whip when I got wacked. I definitely learned not to interrupt the class ever again.

Can you imagine what the millennials (or anyone not from the Boomer generation) reading this thread must think? You guys lived through hell and are bragging about it. Lol ?

Perhaps.
But I would suggest we are all the better for it overall.

My dad told us how the nuns would come by and wack your hand with a wooden ruler. Imagine trying to do that now?
It must have been part of their training. It was the rule with the metal edge that hurt the most.

On a side note:
When I first became an apprentice electrician a journeyman informed me that a ruler was someone in charge in ancient times. A measuring device was called a rule. Your "how to become an electrician app" won't tell you that. Priceless information passed down through the trades.:LOL:

Remember when you got in trouble at school, and then when you got home you even got in more trouble from your parents. The school had already called your mom, and they let her know what you did. The worst thing to hear was wait til your dad gets home. Now days it is never the kids fault by society, or someone else is to blame.

Chris, I agree. The biggest fear was that your parents would find out. The punishment at home was going to be worse.

Which makes me wonder why we taught our children otherwise and now sit back and complain about the results

You're not kidding! All my mom would have to say is "wait 'till your father gets home" and I knew what that meant! :surprised::oops:

Full Disclosure. I'm a Nixon Baby. Gen X.

Which means I remember this too...

And then lived through it a second time during Hurricane Ike. Only then we were limited to 5 gallons and it was enforced by Martial Law. No pictures but we had US Troops sitting on Humvees with a SAW on a turret while we got gas. Fun Times!

Not everyone. My kids grew up the same way. Maybe not with getting paddled in school but if we heard any bad feedback from teachers or neighbors, they knew they were in troubleas we would side with the teachers. They tell us now that was their biggest fear, us hearing about something they did wrong.
And after seeing how others thier age are today, they are thankful for the way they were raised.

Remember these?

Another fond memory was being the technical sort I was always sent to do the mimeograph lessons. I used to get high as a rat doing it too. Being a hyper kid think the teacher figured out it calmed my ass right down for the balance of the day!

Had a 3rd grade teacher that smacked you with a wooden (oak) 12” ruler on the back side of your hand while flat on the desk. Or if you really pissed her off got the earlobe yank out of the room.
