It was not. But looking closer it appears to be blown Around that area. FORD Denied the claim. Knew it would happen, but was worth a shot. Filing through insurance and soonest they can do it is Friday ?.

Never had a car window do that, but I did have my sliding door to my deck shatter like that.

The Ford rep on the phone said it was “ a act of nature” like nothing about this is nature lady?. Dude at the dealer was trying to blame aftermarket tint ?(not a dealer iv purchased from) Supposed to snow a little tomorrow here in VA. Hope I don’t get any leaks, buuuut At least she still looks good from the side ?

Looks like a chip next to the plug where there is a quarter moon burn mark tint may have cut the element creating a short.

My plug on the passenger side was installed bent with no play in the cabling. I caught that at purchase and the dealer added to my warranty 96 months 80,000 miles on the rear glass rather than replace.

I wish they thought like you and I.

This has been tinted since April.

Is this a chip?

The rear defroster is essential just a large resistor. My guess the window tint installer cut the heating element during install creating a short. That short may not have manifested until the time it cracked, or took a bit of time to create the failure. The heating elements are very thin and easy to damage.

Either the defroster only has current when "ON" with a switch or there is always some amount of nominal current. There could also be a sequence at startup to ensure the defroster is plugged in and working, sending a brief current to check the resistance. Not sure, but that looks like a chip in the picture with a burn mark to me.

It kind of does look like a short and melting around the defroster connection

I'm aware this is an old thread but I just wanted to add that I just had this happen to me and both Ford and multiple local dealerships refused to help me with it at all. My rear sliding glass cracked all on it's own when I remote started my vehicle.

The dealership said they "don't want to get involved with it." I called Ford and the dealership that I purchased the truck from. I bought the extended warranty when I purchased the truck because they told me everything would be covered, bumper to bumper, for 7 years (and/or mileage). The truck is a 2020 Lariat with 19,500 miles on it. Ford said the dealer is under no obligation to do anything and they don't have the power to make the dealership do anything. The dealership I bought the truck from told me "there is absolutely no warranty on glass, at all, ever, even the first second you drive it off the lot. The extended warranty does not cover glass."

Has anyone’s rear window glass shattered out of no where?? I was sitting in a parking lot about to leave and I heard a bang. No one was around and I was in a location that no one could have hit the rear window with anything. Super puzzled by this whole situation.

glass has limited coverage on the standard warranty, not sure what an extended warranty could/would cover.
With so many possibilities on why the glass broke, you can see why they put strict limits and critieria on replacement. Always make sure you have good insurance coverage.

The only thing I can offer is sorry your dealer literally lied to you on the coverage.
