I've used mothballs and Irish Spring soap in my boat for years without an issue and I know there are mice in the barn since they find the traps. Works in my dad's cars stored in the same barn.
I also use cedar chips spread around in a bag as insects don't like cedar. I have more spiderwebs in the boat in the summer than I do after storage.

Dryer sheets work, I hear. Rodents don't like the smell and they could be taped or zip tied under the hood. Would smell better than mothballs, too!
Mothballs come in various flavors now like lavendar. Soooo sooooothing... ?
Disclaimer: don't eat them.

Try peppermint oil everyday for a couple of weeks. I had a squire problem, twice in damages to wire$700 and $2k the second time.. especially put it on wires

I'd probably do mothballs. Porcupines apparently love brake lines, and I've heard stories of people scattering mothballs underneath their vehicles at trailhead parking areas in forested areas (especially when folks will be hiking long distances and the vehicle will be sitting for days or weeks) to keep the porcupines from destroying things while they're away.

Benefit of mothballs is that they'll be super easy to obtain most anywhere. And cheap.
Just wanted to add that I can attest to Porcupines loving brake lines...Woke up at 2am this past summer while camping near a place in BC called Retallack, constant "scraping" sound coming from underneath a friends truck...Turns out it was a rather large porcupine sitting on the frame of the truck feasting on the rear brake line. We did everything we could to get it out, but...porcupine. By the time it was done it ate almost 20" of brake line. He took off down the highway and the porcupine fell out going 90km/h. All in all not a good situation. One trick is using chicken wire and wrapping it around the vehicle when leaving it overnight. Obviously will not work with rats though. Just thought id add that this does in fact happen and its not an urban legend like I always thought!

I have a field across the street, mice had always been a problem in my garage, even had one sneak into my f150 once. Since then I've done a few things with huge success. I plugged in several of the small ultrasonic devices around the garage plus I disperse a few peppermint sachets on the floor etc. And I have a also sprayed peppermint oil along the concrete in front of the overhead door. All this was bought at Rural king and Menards. Lowes sells the ultrasonic devices also but no peppermint. Anyway after 2 years of doing this I've only caught one mouse and that was my fault, I had the garage door open all day working outside and it came in and stepped in the 1st trap. I can't say if it's just the ultrasonic or the peppermint but I am sticking with it. The sachets come in a bag of I think 6 and say to replace every few months but I went a year before I read that lol.

Amazon also sells these along with RK and Memards
