I added aftermarket speakers to the stock radio without an amp an it helped a little but not much. The change was you could turn it up more before distortion started.
IMO look for speakers with a sensitivity rating of 91 DB or higher.
There was a place that made a wiring harness adapter to add an amp between the stock radio an the speaker harness so you didn't have to cut any wires. It wasn't cheap but but if I was going to add an amp this is the way I'd go. I think it was about as much as a decent amp.
@Ranger@ , you may want to add some sound proofing before you replace your speakers.
I have a 2020 Lariat with the B & O stereo and I replaced the speakers with what I have listed below. It did make a difference in how it sounded to me.
I Installed these in the rear doors.

The speakers I installed in the center dash and front door are no longer available.
These are similar to the ones I installed in the dash. You have to get two even though you only need one.

I'm working on something for the bass speaker that IMO is a little lacking in the Ranger. The ones for the Ranger that are currently available are a little expensive. I'll report back on that when I get it finished and see how it works.
I'm also going to add some sound deadening material sometime this summer to get rid of that tin can effect my Ranger has.
I probably should have done this first ?‍?‍

I am in this predicament as well. I'd like to improve the sound quality of the system without adding an amp. My STX has an 8' screen and I don't want to spend more than needed to get better treble and a little better sound isolation.you think the radio could handle bigger speakers before i add an amp. If so could you recommend some. Like have you done it and tell me the speakers you put in the doors
I think on any system, you can go up any amount on the speaker's watts as long as the ohms are the same (speaker for speaker swapping). Not sure tho- just my experience with bass/guitar ampsI have the B&O System; I have not pulled the trigger yet on upgrading.
Hopefully someone with the base system can offer guidance on just doing the speakers, it may resort to the speakers being underpowered so they will distort at high volume but get a better sound quality at normal listening level without adding an amp, unless you stay close to the factory wattage and ohm
