I live in an HOA so of course you see guys tooting around on occasion role playing private investigators in their unmarked cars taking photo.

Today one almost got an ass-chewing.

No identifcation, clothing or other wise, knocked on my door.

"Yes?"

"Does someone still live next door at XXXXX address?"

"Who are you?"

"Property inspector."

I'm pretty sure the guy could the read Forrest Gump "Are you stupid or something?" look on my face.

Maybe the guy is ignoring some sort of dress code or operating procedure, but what sort of dumbass company wants the liability of having someone snooping on someone's property without clothing to identify them or go knock on random doors and ask questions BEFORE something as simple as; "Hey how are you? I'm so and so with the property management group."

Seems like a good way to make people aggressively suspicious right out the gate or worse, waste law enforcement time getting called on them.

Have you guys ever encountered something like this with your HOAs?

And yes, we all know HOAs suck balls, it is what it is until I can buy some land and build a house in next 2 years.

A guy from the gas company almost got shot a few weeks ago. Buddy climbed over my locked gate at around 8pm and start dicking around in our backyard. No uniform no logo on veichle, the clacking of a shotgun got his attention quick

Now that's funny....
About 2 months ago, someone, plain clothes, no ID of badge, roaming around my next door neighbor's house...older pickup in driveway. I knew they were out of town and not expecting anyone.
Just took my Rem 12 gauge pump and walked into our back yard, just carrying it. He took one look at me and promptly left.
He also saw me taking his picture, along with pic of truck and license plate.

The only good thing I can personally think of that a HOA does is help prevent a home becoming a run down garbage dump, otherwise I find them VERY intrusive and biased based on very few people's taste and esthetic interpretation due to their likes and bank accounts. Like what size and color is the lettering on your mailbox (before we married my wife got hers dinged because the letters on her mailbox was 1 size smaller than allowed. Same font and color) they also make people store stinky garbage cans in there garage (not pleasant or sanitary) what color flowers you can plant, if you leave a car in your driveway at night etc (even new cars!) I really got tired of taking calls for the HOA presidents who seriously wanted us to enforce their covenants and rules for them! I said if it's not a state law or county ordinance we won't get involved. We aren't a private security company. I refuse to live in any addition that has a HOA.

I'm off my soapbox now ?

A lot of utilities and service companies sub-contract out work now, so meter-readers, cable guys, etc. aren‘t always easy to ID based upon their vehicle or clothing.

It's amazing, even people who have never owned or used a 12 gauge pump shotgun instantly get a pucker factor when they hear that slide rack especially at night! ???

What an asshole. Even if he had a uniform he should still get popped with a beanbag round for being so stupid.

I don't live in an HOA. Assessor did a walk around a few years ago. She knocked on the door and I stepped outside. She said she was from the assessor's office and wanted to come into my house. Told her not without a search warrant. She looked at me as if I kicked her in the leg. She insisted and I said no.....not without a search warrant. She said we're gonna have to estimate your assessment then........I said WTH that's what you do already so what makes the difference?

She then said she needed to take pics of the house........I told her to do it from the sidewalk as she was trespassing.

Never did see her again or anyone from the assessor's office. Whenever I go to the courthouse I always stop by the assessor's office......just to look around........nobody ever offers their assistance. LOL I'm good with that!

Funny story, so my metal garage was built about I dunno, year and a half ago. Due to landscape, fencing, and house layout, you can't really see it readily.

I received a door hanger notice a few months back stating same thing "call to discuss metal building or we have to use estimates".

I've never had a CA knock on my door for any home I have lived in.

Now, follow me, this might be a bit tin-foil, but here is where technology is taking us I think;

The CA office now has software, using something like Google Maps. Periodically this software does scans of the satellite mapping and when it detects an anomaly, probably of designated size/dimension, it flags the area of the map and notifies a human being that someone more or less needs to go eyes on the ground to check it out.

I can think of no other logical way this is happening, there is no way a CA employee is driving around my vast county and can recall from memory when someones individual property has changed, more or less changed on a part of the property that is somewhat out of view by simple drive bys. I guess its possible, I just don't see it as probable.

Any assessor employees on here? How far fetched does my mapping software idea sound? I live in Columbia County GA, a very rich, robust, and economy armored place, if this technology exists they would have it.

(by rich I mean very well run, not that we all live in McMansions)

As a County employee for 34 years, I can say no they don't go inside to do an estimate for the assessor. Like you said they use the GIS software that superimposed the lot lines on the sat pic as well as landowner names. Heck I've had mortgage appraisal companies for refinancing that never came over and never drove by. They used online crap, my estimate came out good but it was inaccurate, wrong # of bedrooms and a 2 car garage not 3. Only building & or electrical inspectors have ever come inside.

In NJ I used to get letters from some company in NY saying I needed to schedule an appointment for an assessor and needed to be home to them in. I never once responded and my taxes stayed pretty much the same for over a decade. When I bought the house in MO the realtor told me an assessor will send a letter asking what my purchase price is and that I should NEVER respond to it, heh.

By the way the house I sold in NJ, right after the property taxes went from $5500 to $6800 that year and now is tracking to $8000. I think the new owners answered the letter.

The neighbor probably complained. Happened to me at the old house when I built a shed in the backyard. It is surprising how noisy and petty some suburbanites can be.

Negative on that, or highly unlikely, the four neighbors I have are all good people and would be very out of character for them.

Property Taxes here in Nebraska are ridiculous! They go up every year. Went into the Assessor's office and told them I wanted a listing of taxes on every property for sale in the county. They looked at me fu ny and said a slow O.....K........ told them with the way they raised valuations I was gonna make a boat-load and retire! They found no humor in this at all!
