Mods are more than welcome to move this to the correct area as I couldn't figure out where and this seems suitable for now.

So for those that have bothered to try it, has the membership for Overland Bound been worth it for you?

I understand it is more of an adventure type group vs just a vehicle specific group through many different parts of the US and possibly other places as well.

I'm simply wanting input from others on it.

I was just reading reddit posts asking if Overland Bound was dead. Seems the founder hasn't been updating any videos in over half a year and they started working at Meta back in 2023.

People feel like they got scammed over the fundraising they did.

The forum is free to register to, just like here. There’s 1000% more overland, camping, offroad and destination info over there than here. This forum sorely lacks adventure, camping travel i.e. ‘overland’ info. I don’t know what a paid membership gets you other than a member patch.

If you go back and look, you will find that the free membership is useless as you can do certain things like download a GPX file to transfer to a GPS.

Ah, right. I generally peruse the forum for specific gear or rig info. For trip info, I generally get enough intel to chart my own course or inspire interest in a location I wasn’t aware of. Google and a premium Gaia GPS membership are my mapping tools.

Honestly, I wish specific lat/longs weren’t shared as that has often resulted in overuse. Maybe less so on ‘old school’ social media like forums (my preference), but you drop pins on instagram, the hordes descend.

Overland Bound's community features and meet-ups are certainly a nice addition to have.

I personally use "onX Offroad" for my off-roading. Being able to markup routes, maps, and waypoints; and then pull those up on the vehicles infotainment system is crazy convenient. It's great for seeing what areas are private/public lands. A subscription includes an online gui and 3D map functionality. Plus, there's a whole suite of other layers and filters you can use to pick out trail widths compatible with your vehicle, review trail condition reports, see approximate temps, etc.

OnX isn't even close to Overland Bound. OnX is more of a cheap imitation of a GPS that you use on your phone. I myself refuse to go that route and actually use a dedicated GPS for that kind of stuff.

Now let's stick to the topic at hand which I see you started with at least.

Something to keep in mind with Overland Bound. The basic forum is cheap. To get a bunch of the features, you must pay. Part of why I'm asking about others that have used it if they found it to be worth it or not.
